#silverSearcher

Anybody need a hairless yak?
Every time i tried to use a longer option in #ag (The Silver Searcher) in Cygwin, it complained about _split_longopt.
So i spent like half an hour hunting down exactly which file defined the #bash completion for ag on cygwin.
It is /etc/bash_completion.d/ag.bashcomp.sh
For some reason bash completion are split between that directory and /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/.
Putting them in one directory would have been too easy.

Silver Searcher can also match paths, instead of file contents. `ag -g <regex>` recursively finds paths that match a regular expression. Unlike `find -regex ...` it ignores files you usually don't care about (.git/*, *.pyc, *.min.js, ...) #SilverSearcher #TIL

@zolyguy I wrangle logs with #SilverSearcher, #AckGrep, and #pcreGrep all the time. I don't mind it. What bugs me is poorly written logs. Too many projects log stuff without structured logging or a sensible retrieval strategy in mind, so that's what makes it hard to cope with sometimes esp. when you're trying to enrich logs from multiple data sources. But slicing and dicing text? I could do that all day!

😤
Wieder ein Problem gelöst, das sonst kaum einer hatte:
Die Kombination
•#Konsole (#KDE #Plasma #Terminal)
•#ag (#SilverSearcher)
•#Dracula Farbschema

Screenshot eines Konsolen-Fensters.
Text:
$ ag TERM .bash*
.bash_aliases
165: TERM=xterm-256color

Farbschema ist ein Dark Mode.
Dunkler Hintergrund. Text ist hellgrau, grün und Rosa.
Das 2. »TERM« ist hellblau-auf-rosa, und mit dem geringen Hellichkeitskontrast praktisch unlesbar.

Otoh, carefully ag’ing (what i do insted of greping) my word list after the fact gave me exactly one word for the 3rd line.

Briefly tried nnn with no real opinion resulting from it. Might reevaluate later. Using ripgrep and also sometimes ag aka #silversearcher. But I think ripgrep is superior.
