A huge driver of this project is how much I (used to) spend on otter subscriptions to transcribe hearings I couldn't stomach sitting through. This is better, it's free, and it gives me something to do with my brain while the world is on fire.

It currently requires a separate indexer to build a cache out of thousands of WebVTT files into an index, but I finally did it. A tool to search inside every hearing in an entire state across the past 8 years for specific #legislation.

GUIs are very nice yes, but nothing makes you feel quite as powerful as a successfully chained command line pipeline.

For example, taking a massive log file and filtering it through cat | grep | awk | sort | uniq -c to find the exact problem in seconds is a form of wizardry that modern UI simply cannot replicate.

Sometimes I believe the pipe | might be the single greatest invention in computing history lol 😋

It's wild that we still don't have anything more portable than #bash scripts. And `curl | sh` being the norm says a lot about legacy in our tooling.

In #ksh / #ksh93, you can just type ‘r + Enter’ and it also immediately pulls up the last command and runs it. It’s an alias for ‘hist - s’ or ‘fc -s’

In #bash or #zsh, if ‘!! + Enter’ is only expanding the previous command but not executing, it’s because histverify is on. To turn it off, add this to your ~/.bashrc:

shopt -u histverify
