@JorisBohnsonPM tangential, but relevant.

"Long before four of the largest faces on Earth were dynamited into the granite edifice of Mount Rushmore, the #Lakota #Sioux saw a different set of portraits: The mountain was known as Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe (the Six Grandfathers)."

#indigenousamericans #whitewashinghistory #mountrushmore #ushistory #sixgrandfathers

The original mountains of Mount Rushmore.

"before the presidents' faces were carved into it, it was called the six grandfathers, part of the sacred black hills of the Lakota tribe. The US government seized the land illegally in 1877 after gold had been discovered there. President grant secretly ordered the army not to protect local tribes, as bounty hunters collected up to $300 for each Native American killed. The carving of four presidents into the hills took place in the 1920s, funded in part by the kkk.

Jason Galanis Sentenced To More Than 14 Years In Prison For Defrauding Tribal Entity And Pension Funds Of Tens Of Millions Of Dollars
Friday, August 11, 2017
For Immediate Release
U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of New York

Joon H. Kim, the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that JASON GALANIS was sentenced today by the Honorable Ronnie Abrams to 173 months for defrauding a Native American tribal entity and numerous pension fund investors of tens of millions of dollars in connection with the issuance of bonds by the tribal entity.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim said: “In a brazen securities scheme designed to enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else, Jason Galanis and his co-conspirators cheated both their tribal clients as well as the investing public. After defrauding a Native American tribe into issuing bonds, Jason Galanis and his cohorts sold the illiquid bonds to unwitting pension funds, and then stole the proceeds for themselves. For his role in this campaign of theft and deception, Jason Galanis will now spend over 14 years in federal prison.”

So, that could be the end of #GreenpeaceUSA. Of course such a lawsuit is being filed against an NGO helping #Sioux and others in protesting the North Dakota Access #Pipeline. Disgusting, how big capital can do whatever it wants in #Trump's #USA.

#Movies

Just streamed a movie that I've never seen before.

It's called #WomanWalksAhead starring #JessicaChastain doing what she does so well, playing a brave, rebellious & independent #woman, who in this case portrays a female painter named #CarolineWelden, who in real life befriended & painted a portrait of #SittingBull. the #Sioux chief, before he was killed in a confrontation w/the US soldiers to were attempting to arrest him.

The portrayal of his relationship w/Ms. Weldon & the circumstances of his death in the movie are fictional but the white American genocidal actions against #NativeAmerican people, as represented in the film, have been well proven & documented by history.

I'm going to buy the #DVD of this movie.

Today in Labor History February 27, 1973: 300 Oglala Sioux activists from the American Indian Movement (AIM) liberated and occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota. This was the site of the infamous Massacre at Wounded Knee (1890). They occupied the site to protest a campaign of terror against them by the FBI, and corrupt tribal officials, and the tribal thugs knowns as GOONs (Guardians of Oglala Nation). The occupation lasted over 2 months, before being quashed by the U.S. government. 3 Native activists were killed. Dennis Banks and Russell Means were indicted for their roll, but charges were later dropped due to prosecutorial misconduct.

'People are scared': #FortPeck #TribalChair urges members to carry IDs to avoid #deportation

by Nora Mabie Jan 24, 2025

"#FortPeckAssiniboine and #Sioux Tribal Chairman #JustinGrayHawk on Friday issued a statement urging tribal members to carry their tribal IDs amid growing concern over President Donald #Trump’s recent executive orders.

"Gray Hawk wrote that community members feared the possibility of '(deporting) #NativeAmericans along with Mexicans in the hope that nobody can tell the difference.'

"When asked if the tribal enrollment office had received an uptick in calls after Trump’s inauguration, Enrollment Officer Twyla Red Eagle said, 'Yes. Yes. Yes.'
'Just this afternoon, we had 15 people in here,' she said. 'And people are calling from out-of-state where they had deportations already. … People are scared.'

"Fort Belknap Indian Community Vice President Judy King on Friday issued a similar statement, advising members to 'keep a copy of your tribal identification card on you at all times.'

"#NavajoNation Council delegates said they'd been contacted by tribal members in #Arizona who said they were detained by #ICE, according to the Arizona Republic.

"On his first day in office, Trump issued a slew of executive orders related to #immigration. He declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and said he plans to send U.S. troops to support agents, according to The Associated Press.

"Trump issued an executive order denying #USCitizenship to the children born in the states of parents living in the U.S. illegally. A U.S. District Judge temporarily blocked the order and as of Jan. 21, 22 states had sued to block the move, according to The Associated Press.
To request a #TribalID, visit the Fort Peck Tribes’ enrollment department or call 406-768-2311. The Fort Belknap Indian Community enrollment office can be reached at 406-353-8531 or 406-353-8532."

Today in Labor History January 8, 1877: Crazy Horse and his warriors fought their final battle against the U.S. Cavalry at Wolf Mountain, Montana Territory. Just six months earlier, Crazy Horse and Chief Gall had led Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors in the routing of Custer and the 7th Cavalry in the Battle of Little Bighorn. Many bands of Sioux and Cheyenne had returned to the reservations to get food and supplies in preparation for winter. However, Congress had demanded that they cede the Black Hills in exchange for these goods, and they replaced the civilian contractors in charge of these supplies with army soldiers. This convinced many people to avoid the reservations and mistrust the U.S. government even more than they already did. Then, in December, U.S. troops defeated Sitting Bull’s band, as well as Dull Knife's Cheyennes, who had trekked through snow to join Crazy Horse. Considering their weakened condition and the approaching winter, Crazy Horse tried to negotiate peace with the army. The army responded by murdering Crazy Horse's delegation. Consequently, they continued fighting. The final battle occurred on January 8, 1877. While only 3 people died on each side and the battle was essentially a draw, the U.S. treated it as a strategic victory in light of their recent humiliation at Little Big Horn, and because it showed they could avoid defeat under harsh winter conditions.

A photoprint of an illustration portraying Native American (Sioux and Cheyenne) and white men participating in the Battle of Wolf Mountain in Montana. A howitzer stands near a cliff edge in position to fire upon the Native Americans. From the original newspaper story: Our engraving, from a sketch by an officer of the expedition, represents the battle on the 8th of January, 1877, in the gorges of the Wolf Mountains, at the decisive moment when the Indians endeavored to flank the troops by occupying a high hill to the left and rear. Cradleboards

A cradleboard provides a safe way to care for a baby. Sometimes called "the third mother", the cradleboard could be carried like a backpack, hung from a saddle or doorpost, or propped up near a working parent.

Tribes in different regions have distinctive forms of cradle boards with Plains cradleboards generally having a carved wooden frame covered with heavily beaded hides. The upper part of the cradleboard fitted around the baby's head, protecting it from both sun and rain.
