Today in Labor History December 29, 1890: U.S. Army troops slaughtered 300 Sioux men, women and children in the Wounded Knee Massacre on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. Two weeks earlier, they had killed Sitting Bull for failing to stop the Ghost Dance. The people living in Sitting Bull’s camp fled to the Pine Ridge Reservation, where the U.S. Army caught up to them on December 29. They began disarming the Lakota warriors. However, Black Coyote didn’t want to give up his rifle, because he had paid a lot for it. When his rifle went off in the struggle, the U.S. Army began shooting indiscriminately at the mostly unarmed Lakota. In addition to the 300 Lakota who died, 25 U.S. soldiers also died. And 20 soldiers were given the Medal of Honor.

L. Frank Baum, author of “Wizard of Oz,” was a newspaper editor at the time. He wrote, “Having wronged them for centuries, we had better, in order to protect our civilization, follow it up by one more wrong and wipe these untamed and untamable creatures from the face of the earth. In this lies future safety for our settlers and the soldiers who are under incompetent commands.” Sound similar to some of the current quotes coming from Israeli and U.S. politicians with regards to Palestine? Or MAGA fascists with regards to immigrants and trans folk? And then there was General Martinez, who launched the 1932 genocide against El Salvador’s indigenous people, and against it’s communists and union activists, who said that the U.S. was great because it had wiped out its indigenous population, and for El Salvador to become great, it must do so, too.

Today in Labor History December 26, 1862: The U.S. military hanged 38 Indigenous people in Mankato, Minnesota, for participating in the "Sioux Outbreak," in the nation’s largest single-day public mass execution. They built the gallows in a square shape, with ten nooses per side. They buried the victims in a mass grave along the bank of the Minnesota River. Despite a large guard force posted at the gravesite, doctors stole all the corpses on the first night to use for research. William Worrall Mayo took the body of Maȟpiya Akan Nažiŋ (Stands on Clouds). In the late 20th century, the Mayo Clinic returned his remains to a Dakota tribe and created a scholarship for a Native American student as apology.

The mass execution was punishment for an uprising that had begun in August. The U.S. government had forced the Sioux to give up their land and move onto reservations on a thin strip of land along the Minnesota River. The government also encouraged them to stop hunting and become farmers. However, the winter of 1861 was particularly harsh, causing mass starvation. Competition for resources increased between the Indigenous people, and the white settlers and traders. In August, 1862, a faction led by Chief Little Crow decided to attack the Lower Sioux Agency, and drive the settlers from the Minnesota River Valley. In the following weeks, they escalated their attacks, killings hundreds of settlers. The U.S. military, which was bogged down with the Civil War, was slow to respond. But by late September, they had quashed the uprising. Initially, the U.S. government sentenced 303 Indigenous men to death. President Lincoln reviewed the convictions, offered clemency to 265, and approved the death sentences of 38. Most of the defendants had no lawyers and spoke no English and had no way to defend themselves in court. Some of the trials were as shorts as five minutes each.

Summary of Iya the Camp-Eater, #Sioux #folklore retold by Zitkala-Ša (Yankton Dakota) in Old Indian Legends (1901):

Hunters found a baby in the woods and brought him back to their chieftain. He gave the baby to his daughter to raise despite voices of caution that the baby might be an evil spirit: The chieftain found it cowardly to leave a child to die in the wilds out of excessive caution. He ordered a feast and dance to name his new grandson Chaske.

In the night the chief's daughter, sitting with her sleeping child, heard the sound of a camp from his open mouth. The chieftain realized the baby was Iya the Camp-Eater, only powerful in the night, and had the village flee with their teepees so quietly that Iya never woke.

In the morning Iya, enraged at finding the village gone, threw off his baby shape to show his true form as a giant with spindling legs. He crossed a river to the village's new encampment only to be slain by knife-wielding warriors. Lo! An entire village Iya had eaten rose out of the fallen giant, rejoicing in their newfound freedom. With Iya's killing there was no more danger of camp grounds being swallowed overnight. #mythology #MythologyMonday #Indigenous

This black and white photograph depicts a person dressed in traditional Native American attire riding on horseback through an open field. The rider, who appears to be wearing two feathers on their head along with what seems like beadwork on the shirt, is seated atop a pale-colored horse that has been outfitted with a saddle. In the background, there are rolling hills and patches of trees which suggest this scene may have taken place in an area such as South Dakota or Nebraska where Native American tribes historically resided.
The image is labeled "Sioux Indian on horseback," indicating that it shows someone from the Sioux tribe. The photograph dates back to around 1907, according to additional information provided. Edward S. Curtis was a renowned photographer known for his documentation of Native Americans in North America during this period. His work has been preserved as part of various historical collections and exhibitions.

Native People Rush to Feed the People

by @bsnorrell.blogspot.com, #CensoredNews, November 5, 2025

"The #BlackfeetNation brought in a load of produce from the #YakamaNation, and #FortPeck announced buffalo distribution. #GilaRiver is giving tribal members $1,000 in hardship funds, as the government shut-down continues.

"Blackfeet Tribal Council Member Mike Comes At Night brought in a load of produce from the Yakama Nation in Washington State for the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. 'We made it home safely from the Yakama Nation with a generous load of produce for the Blackfeet People. I am honored, as a Councilman, to serve our people. I’ve traveled hundreds of miles to help
bring food home, and at the end of the day, I know I am doing my job. I also want to thank all the farmers who helped us with this food — may the Creator bless them and their families," Comes at
Night said.

"#FortPeck's #Assiniboine and #Sioux Tribes are distributing buffalo meat, and gathering groceries, after declaring a state of emergency in Montana.

"In California, the #Yurok Tribal Council approved $300 food assistance cards for Yurok because of the disruptions in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program #SNAP, and #CalFresh benefits, due to the federal government shutdown.
'Our goal is to help our most vulnerable citizens get through this challenging time,' said Yurok Chairman Joseph L. James, who said the tribe is working to mitigate the hardships on families from
the federal shutdown.

"In #Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the #CherokeeNation announced a $6.5 million response package. This includes cash payments of up to $185 per individual Cherokee Nation citizens on SNAP. It also includes over $1.25 million to support food banks and other non-profit food programs.

"The Cherokee Nation's expanded emergency declaration includes tribal members who are currently on SNAP living anywhere in the United States. The Cherokee Nation has over 470,000 citizens living in all fifty states. Cherokee Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. said the Cherokee's network of 27 “at-large” organizations located in urban areas could access grants of $5,000 to address local food shortages.

"The #GilaRiverIndianCommunity, south of #Phoenix in #Arizona, is distributing $1,000 hardship payments to all adult tribal members, regardless of whether or not they are SNAP recipients.

"Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis said, 'We want to make sure that, as a sovereign nation, we take care of our members during this unprecedented shutdown.'

" 'I hope that this payment brings some peace of mind during this time of uncertainty at the federal
level.' "
