L'église primitive ignorait la vrai date de la naissance de Jésus et ne célébrait pas son anniversaire. Le récit biblique mentionne le fait que des bergers passaient la nuit dans les champs pour garder leurs troupeaux au moment où Jésus est né. Ce n'était donc pas en décembre car ils auraient gelés pendant les nuits froides de l'hiver palestinien. La première indication que la naissance de Jésus a été fêtée le 25 décembre se trouve dans un document romain daté de l'année 336, on avait simplement repris et christianisé la fête romaine du soleil invincible, à cette époque de l'année, le soleil qui semblait sur son déclin retrouvait peu à peu sa vigueur.
