Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum odoratum, Echtes Salomonssiegel) is a valuable component of woodland and forest edge ecosystems. Its tubular flowers attract bees and other pollinators in spring, while its spreading rhizomes help stabilize soil and prevent erosion. As its foliage decomposes, it contributes to humus formation, enriching the forest floor. The plant also offers shelter for insects and small ground-dwelling creatures. A native species in many temperate regions, it supports plant diversity and often indicates undisturbed, healthy woodland environments.
It grows at the entrance of our field, where it helps stabilize a steep slope beneath the road.

A cluster of graceful green plants known as Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum odoratum, Vielblütiges Salomonssiegel) growing in a natural grassy habitat. The plants have arching stems with paired, lance-shaped leaves and bear small, creamy-white, tubular flowers that hang in rows from the leaf axils, not yet fully open. The scene is lightly shaded, with dry grass and wild greenery surrounding the plants.

Giant Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum biflorum var. commutatum) in the rain.

Solomon's Seal gets its name from the markings on the rhizomes which are said to resemble the ancient seal.

Pollinated by bees but the nectar also attracts hummingbirds when the blooms open.

May I introduce myself? I'm Phymatocerra aterrima, the Solomon's seal #sawfly. My larvae are extreme gourmets: they can eat only leaves of #SolomonsSeal and #LilyOfTheValley. If you kill the habitats of these plants, we can't survive. Therefore, we love the #forests of #VosgesDuNord and our photographer's wild #garden.
It's #fairy: #Polygonatum multiflorum is the fairy tale's key 'Springwurz' that opens all doors - perhaps also the magic viper's cave under the elder tree? #NatureMatchCuts

Macro of Phymatocera aterrima living exclusively on Salomon's seal or Convallaria. It's black (in the sunshine blueish-metallic black) and has 4 crumpled looking wings. The richness of biodiversity depends often on how many different food plants exist for extremely specialised animals like this wasp. Their larvae need leaves of this small spectrum of plants.Leaves of Polygonatum multiflorum in the shadow. Very small black fly-like insects sitting on two leaves.
