Oxeye (UV, Visible);

OK, this is one failed attempt but I'm posting it anyway. You can see here clearly the difference between UV (left) and normal (right) looks for this oxeye flower (which I hope I got the name for right). Both images were taken handheld and I was hoping that with the help of PS that I can combine them together to make a "bee vision" image, but unfortunately, PS failed me. I tried to do it manually, but it didn't work quite well. So, decided to post it as is side by side just for comparison. You see how the center of the flower is dark; something you can't see with the naked eye.
Even though I corrected the colors like in the previous shots I've been posting for the past 3 days or so, but the UV colors here just looked different - not complaining though.
Now, I'm trying to think of more targets to shoot in UV!
Now that I don't have anything new left, I think I'll go back to my archive to post daily.

UV Maggie (3);

The last one in this mini-series of dear Maggie in ultraviolet. This time I've changed the angle of shooting to get the center of the flower clearly. It looks like it is glowing (or fluorescent) and here comes the common mix-up. Maybe I should clarify a bit for anyone interested in such stuff:
UV photography is sometimes jumbled between two concepts and people usually mix up between them easily. It's common for people to call photography of glow-in-the-dark objects as "UV photography"; However, this is a misnomer and not correct:-

1. Shooting a glowing object because of its fluorescence properties is a normal photography (maybe for namesake, we might as well call it Fluorescence photography? But I never encountered such a term really).

2. Shooting the UV radiation reflecting off the object. Now, this is the REAL "UV photography" and it requires many preparations (which unfortunately I don't have). Basically, it needs a modified camera to shoot for UV (and typically for IR) and special filters to allow UV and block IR radiations, and other stuff related to the lenses.

Maggie here is shot using the 2nd type. In other words, a REAL UV image, despite the technical difficulties. Sometimes such images are merged with a regular normal image (aka visible light image) to form something called "bee vision"; however, this rendition is debated and it's not quite proven that bees see the world in that manner, but it is almost certain that bees do have some UV sensing in some way.

UV Maggie;

Remember Maggie? The pink flower? This is it in UV.
Since it was shot handheld and with UV (and IR block) filters, the exposure was hard and ISO was on auto and naturally rose to 6400, hence the noise. I tried to clean the noise but touching it further would render the image so soft. This is also a crop from the original (a took out a big chunk out of it).
What's interesting here is how the middle portion is tinted yellow a bit - I've actually put on some saturation (when colors were correct the flower was almost white), and this yellow comes out naturally when saturation is added, and would be even stronger if the saturation was even added more. It is speculated that bees see such differences in the flowers under UV.

@f_dion @jet this Axel seems like an insanely cool instrument. I didn't know it even existed but it looks syrreal.

If anybody interested, there is recently released Loris Synth - a DSP based #spectral #waveform #analyser for eaganmatrix instruments. I'll probably try it out if I have some free time later this year. It's not fully standalone in a sense that the analysis is done inside the computer but after initial converting, all the sounds will be available in the standalone instrument.

A research collaboration has developed a novel fabrication technique for producing high-performance in the region. The team achieved an entire octave-wide bandwidth filter with superior attenuation (40–50 dB) in the stopband region! This is a great leap forward in filter technology. #Spectral (2016) is a scifi monster #film set within a gritty urban modern European civil war - emphasis on the "gritty" part. It's almost obscene how realistic the ravages and ruins of warfare are portrayed, that something as trivial as a wraith-like adversary is shoved into the middle of this.

But it works!

As a DARPA scientist tries to make sense of this supernatural enemy, and the CIA agent works to coopt it, this #movie delivers on the action, suspense, and thrills. 👍
