#stereochemistry

2025-05-21

Early in the #evolution of life a biochemical network was encapsulated within a membrane compartment. This study shows that specific #membrane forms can select for stereochemical compounds that match the pattern of #stereochemistry used by all known living things @PLOSBiology plos.io/4jdyLh1

Summary of permeability selection results for the archaeal and hybrid membranes. Top: the lipid compounds used for vesicle construction and permeability comparisons. Middle and bottom: summary of permeability function. Pentose sugars are notated as pentagons, hexose sugars as hexagons, and amino acids as circles. Arrows indicate permeability function across the various membranes where wider blue (l) or red (d) arrows denote a significant differential enantiomer permeability selection. Key indicates which arrow side represents which enantiomer. Compounds colored orange indicate enantiomer selection that matches the core biochemistry of life. The authors have added glycine here based on results from their previous work. Glycine has no stereochemistry and has been shown to permeate both the archaeal and hybrid membrane

#nyt #games needs an education in #polymer #stereochemistry

Yesterday’s spelling bee game. The letters available are N, T, P, A, I, Y and C (center). Already guessed and visible: tactic. Typed out is TACITICITY but this is being rudely rejected by the game for not being a word 😱😋

🎁HBT Jay S. Siegel who turns 65 today. At Princeton Univ. he developed a keen interest in manifested in the co-authorship of the legendary JACS paper “La Coupe du Roi and its Relevance to Stereochemistry” (DOI: 10.1021/ja00344a003). Today he is Senior Advisor at the Univ. of Hong Kong. Aside from his stereochemistry expertise Jay is known for his chemistry and for his contributions to science.

#KnowledgeByte: #Stereochemistry is the branch of chemistry concerned with the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms and molecules and the effect of this on chemical reactions.

One of it's most important application is drug design.

In this study, is used to calculate , or reverse, reactions going from product to starting materials. Previously, AFIR has been used to predict small, simple reactions, but accurate predictions were out of reach, limiting the technique’s applicability.

"Pasteur not only made milk safe to drink, he established the germ theory of disease, saved the French silkworm population, confronted the scourges of anthrax and rabies, and transformed the curiosity of vaccination against smallpox into a general strategy for treating and preventing human diseases."

Pasteur ranks behind only Darwin among the most exceptional biological scientists of the 19th century."

My second toot to the #ChemiVerse
More reactions! Well, the same reaction as last week (if you were on Tw***er) but now with added #stereochemistry. This #SciViz summary introduces models for diastereoselective addition to C=O with α-stereocentre. There are many more models (& arguments) but hopefully useful.

Might be useful to start reposting the old 1 page summaries on this new (for me) platform?
