La situazione si fa sempre più critica. Di conseguenza, la pressione deve essere massima.

il Piano d'Azione Nazionale britannico per la sicurezza dei giornalisti, lanciato lo scorso anno, afferma che "un mondo in cui i giornalisti sono messi a tacere dalla paura o dalla censura, è un mondo molto più povero".
Siamo d'accordo con questa affermazione. E sottolineiamo che i giornalisti non sono solo quelli impiegati dai principali organi di informazione, ma QUALSIASI individuo che "raccoglie informazioni sotto forma di testo o di registrazione audio e/o visiva, le elabora in una forma giornalisticamente appropriato, e poi diffonde tali informazioni al pubblico" [Wikipedia].
Julian Assange è, perciò, da considerarsi un giornalista a tutti gli effetti. Non solo, ma la sua attività giornalistica ha vinto numerosi premi per l’utilità pubblica delle notizie da lui diffuse. Eppure, da oltre 11 anni, egli viene perseguitato politicamente, solo per aver pubblicato informazioni veritiere nell'interesse pubblico.
Se il governo che Lei rappresenta è veramente "impegnato a fare del Regno Unito un paese in cui i giornalisti siano tenuti il più al sicuro possibile, per svolgere il loro lavoro fondamentale", riteniamo che Lei non debba assolutamente permettere l'estradizione di Assange.
Richiamiamo inoltre la Sua attenzione sul fatto che il governo del Regno Unito ha, in passato, rifiutato le richieste di estradizione statunitensi per Lauri Love e Gary Mackinnon, considerando oppressiva l'estradizione in questi casi, al punto di indurre il suicidio. Ebbene, queste stesse preoccupazioni sono reali anche per Julian Assange!
La chiediamo, pertanto, di onorare questi due precedenti e di non firmare l'estradizione di Assange. In caso contrario, Lei creerebbe un precedente per l'estradizione dei giornalisti, mettendo a rischio lo stesso giornalismo investigativo e il nostro #DirittoDiSapere sancito dall’UNESCO.

The situation is becoming increasingly critical. Consequently, the pressure must be maximum.

“Dear Ms. Priti Patel,
the National Action Plan for the Safety of Journalists published in March last year states that "A world where journalists are silenced by either fear or censorship is a much poorer one."
We agree with this statement.
And we emphasize that journalists are not only those employed by mainstream outlets, but ANY individual who "collects/gathers information in form of text, audio or pictures, processes them to a news-worthy form and disseminates that information to the public" [Wikipedia].
Julian Assange is just such an individual. His journalistic activity has won multiple awards for news worthiness.
And yet, for over 11 years, he has been politically persecuted, simply for publishing truthful information in the public interest.
If the Government that you represent is genuinely "committed to making the UK a country in which journalists are kept as safe as possible to undertake their vital work", you must not permit Assange's extradition.
We also call your attention to the fact that the UK Government has refused US extradition requests for Lauri Love and Gary Mackinnon, considering extradition in these cases as oppressive and capable of inducing suicide. These self-same concerns are real for Julian Assange as well!
Please honour the two precedents and refuse Assange's extradition. Establishing, instead, a precedent for the extradition of journalists will risk imprisoning investigative journalism itself and our #RightToKnow.
