I've been sorting through old stuff, and came across this: a telegram dated 1970, from Don Dunstan, then state premier of South Australia, congratulating my grandparents who lived in a suburb of Adelaide on their 50th wedding anniversary.

@cdarwin And espechally the latter one is a big point.
#USPS is expensive because it has to cover not just #COTUS / ("lower 48" + D.C.) but #PuertoRico, #AmericanVirginIslands, #Guam, #Hawaii, #Alaska, #MinorOutlyingIslands and also do #International #Shipping to #military bases and troops (or at least peer into their supply chains).
Not to mention as a #NationalCarrier per #IPU they also get to do a lot of mandatory stuff that is expensive and not abolishable, from #customs handling to #PosteRestante to god forbid #Telegrams (not the shitty messenger tho!)...
Not to mention USPS has to maintain a shitload of locations to get their mandatory availability to the average household:
#PostalService is #infrastructure, and what happens when infrastructure is being forced to be run as a #ForProfitBusiness with ever absurder #profit demands can be seen in the #UK with their #TapWater systems...
#Durov's arrested is a reminder; #backup your #Telegrams data. here is how:
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone President Akira Shimada has floated the idea of ending the domestic telegram services of its group firms NTT East and NTT West. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/08/08/japan/japan-ntt-telegram-end/ #japan #ntt #telegrams #ntteast #nttwest #akirashimada
By the way, does anyone know what kind of #paper #telegrams were written on by the #royalmail in the late 19th century? 😅
@RayNewman
Can you imagine if modern communication mechanisms were priced by the word? 🤣

Seither nix. https://www.nd-aktuell.de/artikel/1169977.tarifverhandlungen-ansage-der-post-beschaeftigten.html
parts of the article about #telegrams insecurity that I found through a boost of @Digitalcourage might be outdated.

I don't use telegram, so I can't confirm.
