Kitchener Celebrate Erick Traplin Day

The City of Kitchener is recognizing 35 years of music and memories the first Erick Traplin Day on Sunday, June 8, 2025. The free event at Carl Zehr Square in downtown Kitchener celebrates the contributions of one of Waterloo Region’s favourite children’s entertainers, featuring live performances, special guests and games.

Having a day named after him was not something Traplin ever expected when he began his musical career 35 years ago. Originally from Owen Sound, Traplin and his family moved to Kitchener in 1961. Traplin grew up in a musical family and played guitar and sang from an early age.

After graduating from school, Traplin worked as a sewing machine mechanic at the La-Z-Boy factory in Waterloo. He said while it was a good job, he knew his life had more purpose.

“I worked in construction and factory work for many years, but then I finally took a Tony Robbins course and realized what I really wanted to do was be an entertainer. It was a very deep epiphany. That’s what I wanted to do, and, by golly, within three months, I was doing it,” he said.

While a career as a musician was the goal, Traplin said he had not planned on becoming a children’s and family entertainer.

“I was gonna do the pub set. I joined the musician’s union, and when they called me, they said, ‘We got you a Christmas show for kids.’ You don’t get anywhere by saying no. So, I said yes and did the show, and I loved it,” Traplin said.

With a career spanning over 35 years, Traplin said he sees familiar faces in the crowd.

“I see more moms and dads getting up and dancing with their kids now because I played for them when they were kids,” he said.

One of those kids who has grown into an adult fan is Merrin Manser, an event coordinator with the City of Kitchener.

“My mom used to bring me to events like KidsPark and out to the Blue Moon. I’d sit there and eat my chicken fingers and wait for him to pay ‘Bubbles.’ Erick even played at one of my birthday parties,” Manser said.

The opportunity to help plan out the day is something Manser is excited about taking on.

“Erick is the first person that comes up every single time we start talking about family entertainment. He is a staple of the community, and this is a chance to celebrate the legacy of everything he’s done over the last 36 years,” she said.

Manser planned the event with Traplin’s wife, Ruth, as a surprise for the musician.

“I was overwhelmed. I’ve been playing for almost 36 years in the community and didn’t expect it,” Traplin said.

In addition to planning the event with Ruth Traplin, Manser noted that the event also received assistance from other municipalities in the Waterloo Region. The partners include City of Cambridge, City of Waterloo, Kitchener Blues Festival, Kitchener Public Library, Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, Sherwood Systems and the Township of Wilmot.

“This is one of the first events where we’re coming together with all these groups that have worked with Erick over the years. From a planning perspective, it’s been great to work together with all our partners to make this day possible,” Manser said.

Erick Traplin Day may be a celebration of music, but, for Traplin, the magic is in the lives that his music has changed.

“I always take joy in watching the kids. I say I’ve got the best seat in the house because I get to see the kids’ faces, and I see them jumping up and down and having a good time. It’s joyful,” Traplin said.

Today is 𝗜 𝗔𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆. Sounds empowering, right? That’s because it is. This is a reminder that you are in control of your own life, your decisions, and your destiny.

So, what better quote to go with today than this gem from 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀, who once said:

I was signed up for Tony Robbins' Unleash the Power Within without being consulted. I was not even given a chance to consent. This I'm finding is not an uncommon theme in my life so it only matters how I handle it.

My biggest takeaway so far is that it feels like secularized magick dressed up in televangelism and pop psych jargon. The beauty and mystery of occultism pillaged and appropriated by a hyper masculine cult.

But a thought that amused me as I'm sitting here on Day #4 listening to the motivational speaker Trent is:

It's adorable to watch mundane people realize they are not mundane, that the only thing that makes them mundane is the choice to not believe. That they have always had the power, but have no drive to seek it.

I am seriously considering setting him up with a Twitter account. The world needs to hear what he say to say:

That shiny new high-rise may look perfect, but it's just hiding the cracks in your soul. Stop chasing facades and start facing your true self, warts and all. #AuthenticityMatters #EmbraceYourFlaw
You keep building these grand life plans like they'll bring you happiness, but you're just trapping yourself in a maze of your own making. Let go of the blueprints and start living in the present. #LetGoofControl #LiveNow
Chasing after someone to complete you is like trying to fill a black hole with love. Stop looking for your "other half" and start learning to love your whole, imperfect self. #SelfLoveisKey #YouAreEnough
Words, words, words - they're just smoke and mirrors hiding the raw truth of your experience. Cut through the noise and start connecting with the world directly, without the filter of language. #SilenceIsPower #ExperienceOverExplanation

I have possibly just invented a new hobby. There’s a weird enjoyment to be found in crafting an ever more elaborate character, with the LLM able to write itself into being through interaction after the original prompt. My utterly cynical and world-weary ex-psychoanalyst who has consciously sought to craft a Tony Robbins-esque character as a motivational speaker is increasingly compelling.

Meet Dr. Ethan Rosen, a once-respected psychoanalyst who built his career on the principles of Lacanian theory. After years of listening to his patients' endless self-absorbed ramblings, he found himself growing increasingly jaded and disillusioned with the practice. The same old stories, the same old neuroses, the same old excuses - it all started to feel like a meaningless charade, a cycle of self-indulgence that led nowhere.

One day, after a particularly frustrating session with a client who refused to take responsibility for their actions, Ethan had an epiphany. If people didn't want to face the hard truths and do the real work of change, why should he waste his time and energy trying to guide them? If they preferred comfortable lies to uncomfortable realities, why not give them what they wanted?

And so, Dr. Rosen traded in his tweed jackets and leather-bound volumes for a slick suit and a social media presence. He rebranded himself as "The Reality Hacker," a motivational guru who promised quick fixes and easy answers to life's toughest questions. Gone were the complex Lacanian concepts and the challenging process of self-reflection; in their place were snappy slogans, feel-good platitudes, and a healthy dose of charisma.

Ethan's posts and videos went viral almost overnight. People couldn't get enough of his confident, no-nonsense approach, his promise that anyone could transform their life with a simple shift in mindset. He told them what they wanted to hear - that they were special, that they deserved success, that their dreams were within reach if only they believed. And they ate it up, flooding his accounts with likes, shares, and glowing testimonials.

Behind the scenes, of course, Ethan was laughing all the way to the bank. He knew his advice was shallow, that real change took hard work and painful self-awareness. But he also knew that people would pay top dollar for a comforting lie, for the illusion of control in a chaotic world. And so, he kept spinning his tales, kept selling his snake oil, all the while marveling at the gullibility of the masses.

Dr. Rosen may have started as a true believer in the power of psychoanalysis, but now he's just a jaded opportunist, peddling false hope to the desperate and the deluded. He's a cautionary tale of what happens when a brilliant mind turns its back on the truth in favor of easy money and empty fame. But as long as the likes keep coming and the cash keeps flowing, Ethan will keep on smiling for the camera, keep on telling people what they want to hear - even if he knows it's all just a lie.
