Pictures 1-3: Nideggen #Castle (German: Burg Nideggen) is a symbol of the town of #Nideggen in #Germany. The rectangular castle built on a hill was the seat of the powerful counts and dukes of Jülich and had a reputation in the Middle Ages of being impregnable. The foundation stone for the castle was laid in 1177. A Castle Museum opened in 1979 in the castle's tower house. Today, it offers a glimpse of the #Eifel region, which is rich in castles, through its exhibitions which cover an area of approximately 600 square metres.

Pictures 4 & 5: #Abbey Mariawald (German: Abtei Mariawald) in Heimbach. The roots of this #monastery go back to around 1470. In 1486 the first monks were able to move into the monastery under the direction of Prior Johannes vom Goch. The #Trappists, as a reform branch, are entirely in the tradition of the #Cistercians. The order distanced itself from the excessively strict customs of the time, as practiced by de Rancé and de Lestrange, and in the Declaration on the Cistercian Life, made it its task to "reinterpret for our times the traditions bequeathed to us by our fathers". But no reinventions or reforms helped. In 2018, for lack of brothers, the convent of the last Trappists of Mariawald was dissolved.
