🇬🇧 Juvigny-sur-Loison : where history, heritage and religion get together...

🇬🇧 On February, 10, Scholastica is celebrated by the benedictine monks and nuns. She was, following the tradition, the sister of Benedict of Nursia, the grounder of the Benedictine order.

Do you know that the relics of both Benedict and Scholastica are in France? For Benedict, you'll have to go to the Abbey of Fleury in Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire (Loiret) and for Scholastica, the relics are in the church of the village of Juvigny-sur-Loison (Meuse) after having stayed for two centuries in Le Mans (Sarthe). The small village in the Department of La Meuse, located near the Belgian border, was the place of a big monastery in the past.

An incredible story that can be read (in French) here : nordmeusien.blogspot.com/2022/

More about Scholastica can be found on Wikipedia : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scholast

Abbey interior, looking W., Tintern, England between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of the British Isles England Torquay

#England #TinternAbbey #Abbey #Gothic #photography #historicalPhotos #photochrom

loc.gov/pictures/item/20027081

The image portrays an opulent and grandiose abbey interior, specifically Tintern Abbey in England. It features a long nave or central part of the building with intricately designed stone arches that reach towards a vaulted ceiling at both ends. The walls on either side are also adorned with large windows filled with intricate tracery, allowing ample light to flood into the space and illuminate green mossy floors below. Overgrown ivy clings onto parts of the ruins, adding an element of nature reclaiming human-made structures over time.

The Abbey's architecture is reminiscent of medieval Gothic style known for its height, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, although those are absent in this ruinous depiction. The sunlight casts warm hues on the stone surfaces, highlighting textures like moss growths and weathered stonework details. The composition exudes a sense of historical reverence and suggests that Tintern Abbey was once an imposing structure with significant spiritual or communal importance.

There's no visible activity within the abbey; it is deserted except for what appears to be ruins left behind by time, suggesting the building has seen better days but still retains much of its former grandeur. The absence of people may also emphasize solitude and reflection in this historic site.

Maria Laach (1/3)

🇬🇧 It was a very nice day out in Maria Laach (DE). The large lake, apparently calm, is in fact a barely dormant volcano crater! The imposing abbey church under the sun and just before leaving under a threatening sky giving an almost unreal note to the place. There are not too many people in this time of year and this reinforces the serenity of the place.

Today's Flickr photo with the most hits: window in the west front of Shrewsbury Abbey.

The image shows the interior view of a Gothic-style window inside a historic building, likely a church or chapel. The window is tall and arched, divided into three sections by stone mullions. Each section is filled with small, diamond-shaped panes of glass set in a lattice pattern, typical of Gothic architecture.
Through the window, a lush, green outdoor scene is visible, suggesting a garden or natural landscape outside. The light streaming in from outside illuminates the window, creating a contrast between the dark interior and the bright exterior.
Inside, the walls are made of stone, and the floor appears to be covered with a simple, neutral-colored carpet runner. Wooden railings or pews are partially visible on either side of the window, adding to the historic and serene atmosphere of the space. The overall scene evokes a sense of tranquility and timelessness.

#Abbey #Glastonbury #England #GlastonburyAbbey #Gothic #Romanesque #photography #historicalPhotos #photochrom

The image shows a pair of ruins from an old abbey. They are likely part of Glastonbury Abbey, as indicated by the text in the lower left corner and confirmed by external sources. These structures have Gothic architectural features such as pointed arches and ribbed vaults within their remaining walls.

Two large pillars stand prominently on either side with intricate stonework including capitals that suggest a Romanesque influence alongside elements of later medieval architecture like the pointed archways, which are indicative of Gothic style. Between these two columns is an open area where green grass covers the ground and trees encircle them, hinting at their historical significance preserved amidst nature.

There's no visible sky in this photo; instead, a soft gradient from pale to lighter hues suggests either dawn or dusk light conditions. Sheep graze peacefully on the lawn within sight of these ruins adding life to an otherwise somber scene of decay and abandonment.

In the foreground lies what appears to be remnants of stone blocks organized neatly into piles which could have once been part of building materials, possibly for repair work that has not yet commenced or perhaps they were simply left behind by earlier renovation efforts. The presence of these stones gives a sense of ongoing human interaction with this historical site.

We went for a drive in Scotland today and saw Lincluden Collegiate Church and Lochmaben Castle. It was very cold.

On a basalt cone in the middle of Siegburg, the Michaelsberg, Lorraine palatine counts built a castle around 800, on which the Archbishop of Cologne, Anno II, founded a Benedictine abbey in 1064, which existed until 1803. In the following years, the abbey was used for various purposes. The abbey church is still in use today.
The abbey still has a castle-like appearance.
The oldest part is the gatehouse.
