Reached the 1600 day streak studying #Spanish #language with #Duolingo.

I will likely never be as fluent as my mother and certainly will not put the #StarTrek #UniversalTranslator out of work. Nonetheless it is not only fun but useful to be able to #communicate -- even at a basic level -- with neighbors in my #community whose #culture, #history, and daily #LifeExperience is rich and interesting.

With the fully local cloudless voice pipeline in #HomeAssistant, it seems that we can indeed build a miniature #UniversalTranslator the size of a Raspberry Pi.

Also, why do #Klingons learn #English? They're one of the only races that sometimes speak don't speak English in the presence of other races, so they're not relying on a #universaltranslator when appearing to speak English.

@DismalShadow @supernovae Post in whatever language you wish - and tag it as that language, and we'll both be able to communicate with each other more easily. It's like STTNG's #UniversalTranslator, only it's here, and now.

So. Mastodon has this autotranslate thing, and sometimes it flashes the original language just for a sec before translating, and I feel like #StarTrek 's #universalTranslator has entered the chat.

would it though? Or would it turn all languages into a lowest common denominator? After all, we'd no longer 'hear' all other languages in their original form; we'd just get the interpreted form from the #UniversalTranslator, likely losing certain nuances, at least if you're basing it on the #StarTrek UT. For instance, in the #STDS9 episode "Statistical Probabilities" the UT didn't pick up on the use of "passive voice transitive." in a speech by the Vorta.

@thene I did! It was quick too. I really like the way the layout works and it's very easy to navigate and understand. Two Factor Auth is very comforting as well. I think the hardest part was selecting like, 20 other languages to filter out. I feel sad. Like I'm missing out on a lot of the lives of my fellow Earth-mates. #universaltranslator anybody?
