In case you haven't seen this interesting report:

"Two Hunters from the Same Lodge Afflicted with Sporadic CJD: Is Chronic Wasting Disease to Blame? (P7-13.002)"

neurology.org/doi/10.1212/WNL.

<💬>
Clusters of sporadic CJD cases may occur in regions with CWD-confirmed deer populations, hinting at potential cross-species prion transmission. Surveillance and further research are essential to better understand this possible association.
</💬>

For context, here's a fun article:

"Deer Are Beta-Testing a Nightmare Disease"

Yes, the prions can get on and into plants and remain a problem, but it's not clear if the prions can get into flowers, pollen, fruits, roots, tubers. I'm not that worried, yet. cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S25

Illustration by Joanne Imperio / The Atlantic

An abstract illustration with a dark background. It shows a deer shape standing still, but inside it there are small round objects moving and growing. The effect is that the deer is composed of these shapes. It's probably creepy, but you're vegan and you're aware of the horrors of the animal industry, hunting, and trappers, so this doesn't phase you.

So when do we expect hunters to start dying from prion diseases? I don't think we'll know. It's going to be a surprise. With all the things tied to dementia now, it may just be one part of a complex causal pathway, a comorbidity.

Here's a nice microbiology podcast that goes a bit into prions: microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-878/

Here's a paper that shows that CWD can get into humans: link.springer.com/article/10.1 (unfortunately, tested on mice)

<💬>
Notably, our data suggest a different clinical presentation, prion signature, and tissue tropism, which causes challenges for detection by current diagnostic assays. Furthermore, the presence of infectious prions in feces is concerning because if this occurs in humans, it is a source for human-to-human transmission. These findings have strong implications for public health and CWD management.

Here's another study: wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/24/8

<💬>
elk CWD prions could convert human PrPC from human brain and could also convert recombinant human PrPC expressed in transgenic mice and eukaryotic cell cultures

Lucy Proctor investigates and presents the details of the devastating outbreak of BSE (Mad Cow Disease) and later vCJD in humans in the 80's/90s after the Animal Feed Industry formulated cattle feed that included rendered animal products inc. eyes and spines. Cows are vegetable eating ruminants.
