Canadian Elk and Deer herds have been contaminated with CWD which is a prion disease and if you know much about prions you know why that's a big deal and a big problem.
The good news is humans and cows don't have the protein to mis-fold.
The bad news includes that the spread in the wild has reached MB and that means BC is likely up soon too.
If this reaches up North I expect this will be a big deal for caribou.
The SK conservative government of Grant Devine ignored the loud cries of the biologists and farmers to the risk of importing disease with farmed elk. Just over a decade after legalizing game farms, Saskatchewan was eradicating elk on game farms because Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) was imported with diseased elk from Colorado.

There is free testing of deer heads for CWD, but the ivermectin hunters don't bother with that service.

Prediction: As the mis-folded protein (prion) contamination spreads, it is inevitable that it will contaminate lands used to graze Bison, Cows, Sheep, Goats, Pigs and Boar.
In time (not all that much time) all of these will cease being foodstuffs in the United States.
In decades ahead this implies that Beef, Lamb, Pork and Goat, along with Bison, Deer, Elk, and other cervids will cease being food in North America, and Scandinavia.
Let that sink in.

CWD is now in 35 States, 4 Canadian Provinces, Norway, Sweden and Finland. And in captive cervids in most of those, plus Quebec and South Korea.
The major transmission route is fecal-oral. I.e. fecal contaminated land. And once contaminated the land can transmit the disease for 1,000+ years.
