My Signature Move

When writing poems or playing bass
I utilize both time and space
To give my voices power to speak.
I always use the same technique:
It doesn’t matter whether I’m
Composing yet another rhyme
Or jamming on a funky groove…
The Octave is my signature move.

Although I love the anapest,
The iamb’s where I do my best.
My syllables of sixty-four
Make perfect squares. But sometimes more
And sometimes less will do just fine,
As long as there’s four beats per line.
After all—they’re just tools…
And I can bend my own damn rules.

Rhyme is Dead

She reassured me, it was fine
For me to measure out each line,
But not to always rhyme their endings.
Yet how could I deny my tendings?
Continuing to play the sport,
I made a point to keep them short.
But still her voice inside my head
Says, “Poe killed rhyme. Rhyme is dead!”
