The Canadian National Vimy Memorial honours all Canadians who served during the First World War. The Memorial bears the names of those who died in France with no known grave. It is located at the site of Canada’s victory during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Today in 1936, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial is unveiled by King Edward VIII.
The memorial was built by Walter Seymour Allward over the course of 11 years.
Over 50,000 were present for the dedication.
The structure is the centrepiece of a 100-hectare site.

Today in 1922, France grants one square kilometre at Vimy Ridge "freely, and for all time, to the Government of Canada, the free use of the land exempt from all taxes."
The land is still French soil, despite popular belief.
On that land, the Vimy Memorial is built.
