Okay, here's something I really DON'T like using the new MacBook Neo. It looks like it doesn't support any scaled resolutions using a 4K display. If you want your icons to be bigger, you'd have to use a smaller resolution. This is really unfortunate. 😟

My M4 Mac mini is giving me these scaled options, which are a lot nicer to look at.

Oh, well... it is what it is.

Connecting the MacBook Neo to a larger display can easily drive up to 3840 x 2160 pixels at 60 Hertz. This gives you a lot more screen real-estate to play with! 😉

Gaming on the new MacBook Neo? As long as you can play Minecraft and Factorio on this thing, you won't need any other games or hobbies! And I can tell you... these games both run like a charm! Smooth as butter! 😜

Just checked out the #MacBook Neo and my first impressions, it’s definitely a great laptop for casual users, kids and companion device if you already have a bigger Mac laptop or desktop. The keyboard is solid and it runs #macOS and the same apps you already use. I will admit, the screen is a bit on the small side especially for me with struggling eyesight.

I like the MacBook Neo, despite not having seen one yet.
Am I going to buy one?
Probably not, because I already own 2 macs.

Albo inaczej, iPhone to MacBook bez klawiatury, gładzika, z małym displayem i iOs 😉

I have a simple script that adds and updates dates in a blog post by #prek (#precommit) before #git commit.

It works well in #linux, but does not work as expected on #macos. In Mac it sets initial time, but does not update it.

I thought it’s very simple bug, very good to delegate to #AI coding tool, my #aiagent was #github #copilot.

Copilot generated me #Nodejs code inside bash to fix the issue, but it did not. It rewrote almost completely my #bash script to #nodejs, but it did not work as well.

When I gave up and checked by myself, it required to add “-u” option to “date” cli for macOS.

There was an another task that involved another git command’s parameters and “AI” decided to add 20 lines of code with no positive result.

How do people build a #startup and fully functional apps with it?

I use it for function generations, tests, structs… but when it goes to something more complicated it never works with “good enough” quality for me.

I built a Mac app called CaptionSnap that saves your meeting captions as clean transcripts. It reads the captions already showing in Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet and saves them locally as markdown with real speaker names and timestamps.

No bot joins your call. No audio recording. No cloud. Under 1% CPU.

$9.99 one-time, no subscription.

@miekg Oh... I feel you are an expert there :)

My path have started from #gentoo with #emerge with later various distro hops, like #OpenSuse #Ubuntu #Mint #Debian, etc.

But deep dive Gentoo I liked the most, since it had the least issues with packages. The reason I've never came back there, is a compilation time.
I remember how I build KDE for more than 20 hours (Celeron 2.4 in early 2000s).

After many years in #MacOS (right now it's also a primary OS, Arch is only on a big PC), it's really confusing that many things are not available without hacks.
In MacOS #Homebrew made it so simple, it's hard to accept that Linux may have so many complications with a package distributions.

It looks like #snap or #flatpack should fix this issue, but they don't. Many things from snap don't work or do not available, flatpack the same.

Installing Homebrew in Linux does not feel right.

Over the last few days I shipped 2 major features for thecommander.app that would shock the pants off 99% of Electron apps out there:

1. Multiple windows – I just love it. I can keep all sessions in tabs or separate windows and lay out my work on the desktop however I want.

2. UI session restoration – this feels so natural. I can close the app and relaunch it at the exact moment where I left off.

Would anyone be interested in collaborating with me to develop and maintain a component library for ? The goal is to ensure that desktop applications built with or have a more visually consistent look when targeting macOS exclusively.

I know React Desktop (reactdesktop.js.org/) exists, but it is outdated, stuck on macOS Sierra, and seems to be unmaintained.

Some work is already in progress.

I just played a little bit of "Divinity: Original Sin 2, Definitive Edition" on the MacBook Neo. I installed and ran the game through Steam and then went through various graphics settings.

Running the game in the full screen resolution of 2408x1506 at "High" settings works, but you'll only get around 20-30fps, which feels a bit sluggish. At a lower resolution, the game quickly becomes a lot more playable. At 1408x881, I could even set everything to "Ultra" and still maintain 60fps. In the end, I went with a compromise and set it to 1637x1024 at "Medium" settings. This would also run perfectly well at 60fps.

Conclusion: For a little gaming on the go, or maybe even an occasional LAN party with some friends, the MacBook Neo with its A18 Pro chip is perfectly capable of playing some games. It's not a gaming machine, but you can definitely find an acceptable setting. We've all had worse gaming PCs in the past and still had fun! 😉
