Close-up of a viper's bugloss/blue thistle. This is a very special looking kind of plant. Its purple-blue flowers and green, hairy looking leaves spring from a pale root. The reddish stamens of the blossoms are of unequal length and protrude far out of the corolla. The plant is very popular with insects and butterflies as there is plenty of nectar.

I'm home now and have downloaded the photos from my (proper) camera. This is what the flowers look like close up. Thanks to some rather nifty biochemistry, budding flowers are pink, open ones are blue.

Btw - in case you've not come across the name before, the second word is pronounced bew-gloss rather than bug-loss.

Oh - and I meant to say, bumblebees love them! There were loads buzzing around feeding on these this afternoon.

There is a black and white beetle resting on one of the petals - it's an oval shape, black with two white spots at one end and two triangular white shapes at the other.

Viper's bugloss, echium vulgare. The plant can cause irritation to humans by brushing up against it. It is toxic to cattle however young shoots are edible when picked small and green. Large amounts can cause liver damage though. It can be a medicinal plant. Being used as an infusion to treat fevers and chest conditions.
