DuBois operated continually under family control for six generations!

When the company celebrated their 100th anniversary in 1885, the newspapers proclaimed that they were already one of the oldest watchmaking companies in Switzerland.

March 18, 1885: “Houses that have the privilege of having a hundred years of life are quite rare; so we are happy to report a case of this kind that has just occurred in the watch industry. This is the house Ph. DuBois et fils, which has existed in Le Locle since 1785, in Frankfurt am Main since 1845, and which also had a branch in Amsterdam from 1807 to 1842. On the occasion of this anniversary, Messrs. DuBois and sons published an elegant address card, printed in several shades, of a completely artistic genre and a respectable format (0*.27 out of 0.35). In the center, we see in perspective, through an elegant window surmounted by the family's coat of arms, the house in which the Locle factory is installed. On the left, a noble father of 1785 who contemplates a watch that, by its dimensions, is quite reminiscent of our current clocks, while on the right, an elegant of 1885 looks at her tiny stopwatch if the time of the appointment has not soon arrived. At the bottom of the sheet, an old watchmaker, whose type is well known in our Mountains, works on his workbench. Congratulations to Messrs. DuBois and son and to the author of this ingenious composition.”

I think a "wowee!" is appropriate here. Fantastic engineering and goed looking as well, though maybe not an every day watch. Of course, the price is even more astronomical than the watch.

The image shows a close-up of a Christiaan van der Klaauw Grand Planetarium Eccentric wristwatch.
The watch features a complex and captivating dial that depicts a miniature orrery, showcasing the real-time positions of the Sun, Moon, and the planets of our solar system as they orbit the Sun.

Still in love with this one. My first big work on a watch. A lot of scars on the dial (some made by myself at the time..), hands in a poor state but still charming !

Sternglas back with another banger #watches #watchmaking

Someone’s wrist, wearing a sweater, over a wood coffee table with a camera and a journal on it out of focus. On their wrist is a camel banded, golden case watch with index hands and orange lume. The legends are white and in two rings of thin dashes pointing towards the center, with second numbering on the outside of the outer ring and hour numbering on the inside of the inner ring. There are raised orange dots at the cardinals. It has a day complication.

Since we're highlighting Canadian companies we like, I recommend an outfit I've used in the past to order clock movements and watch bands.

Don't know what the future holds vis-à-vis cross-border commerce, but I've always had good service from Perrin.

Take a look if you need tools or parts having to do with horology. Cool stuff.

Did you know you could buy a Patek Philippe watch in Bloomington, suburban Minneapolis?

I, frankly, did not. The big billboards advertising such just didn't sink in till now.

The claim in this column is that the big Swiss watchmakers are reticent to maintain relationships over ownership changes, so the store will go out of business when its owners retire.

What will become of the in-house watchmakers? and the Labradors?

“You walk in those double doors and, if you’ve never been here before, you can be kind of intimidated,” Hope said. “We might have beautiful, spectacular things, but we’re just regular people loving our dogs.”

Not a jewelry person but I found this story interesting.

While we often turn to #Switzerland when it comes to the craft of making #watches. Increasingly some really oustanding (and affordable) ones can be found in : #Germany, #Thailand and #France.

For example, founded in 1925 #Laco makes anything from dress watches to #WW2 flieger and #sports watches.

I will post more on interesting brands in the coming weeks.

Progress with my business (LLC) is going very slow, but steadily moving forward I suppose! This year I got my first "actual" customer. By that, I mean someone that wasn't just a buddy that needed some work done. That was a great feeling to realize!

The next step is putting out more videos and selling watches. The progress is astoundingly slow because I am not focusing my whole life/day/time into it. I don't have a safety net where I can fully jump in, and that's just fine! As long as I can steadily progress, I'm counting it as a win.

Oh, I suppose I should also hire a local CPA to help me sort out how owning an LLC factors into personal taxes so I can get a couple bucks back. 😅

So has been a great hobby for me that allows for detaching from the computer, but also still use similar skills to development…. I can't count the times I've had to debug something going wrong, test and measure improvements, or just think about the stack of things connecting to each other while working on watches. I just completed my second watch service this weekend and thought I'd share all the ups and down of this watch.

I'm surprised how much has been probably the closest non-programming thing I've done that gives me the same enjoyment. It seems to actually exercise some of the same skills. Tonight, for example, I had to debug something where the crown stem wouldn't engage which led me to disassemble a lot of my previous work to figure out what thing needed fixed. I might as well set up a JIRA instance for my watchmaking. 🙃
