“But 2,000 years underwater didn’t do the #Antikythera mechanism many favors. Seawater rich with salts and other chemical compounds reacted with the high amount of copper in the bronze mechanism, slowly corroding it and replacing it with a green-hued rock known as #atacamite.”

I'm always get giddy when I discover pinball designers have reused a common mech in an unexpected way. Flipper mechs are one such thing that just keeps on popping up in the weirdest places.

Here's Homer from The Simpsons Pinball Party (Stern 2003). He can turn his head right for extended periods and then return to the center. Under the playfield we'll find a stripped flipper mech, the kind we could find in upper or mini-playfield flippers.

This design probably saved them reinventing the wheel and with PWM-controlled flipper coil they can have Homer turn his head to the side for as long as they like. And since it moves so rarely, it'll probably last decades in normal use.

Up to late 80s various coin operated devices had separate mechanical rejector for each type of coin accepted. This was often not optimal, the customer wanted the conveniency of paying with what they had and in some places, like border towns the neighbouring country's currency was also taken.

Enter the electronic rejectors. Now a single device can recognise various coin types and let the connected game or vending machine know what coin was exactly inserted. The pricing could be as complex with discounts as the coin operated device's software could do.

The electronic rejectors could be easily configured via computer to accept new currencies or updated versions of the local coins. Your arcade had custom tokens? No problem.

The rejector scans the coin for things like dimensions, metal composition, surface embossing, holes and will reject the foreign coins that were close enough to local ones to fool a mechanical rejector.

Until the 90s, between you inserting a coin and starting a game stood a mysterious mechanical device. Like magic, it would take in a coin, shuffle it around and decipher if you were trying to pass a washer as a coin or if it was the real deal!

Mechanical coin rejectors also caused the now completely forgotten limitation of each coin type having their own slot. Since one rejector could be tuned only for a single coin type, you'd need a whole coin chute - rejector - reject/accept -chute combo for each coin type the machine accepted.

The rejector weights the coin, runs it past a magnet in a track where too small coins would fall through, too large ones would get stuck and only the right size coins, made of right metal would move the exact right speed, so they'd be slowed down to drop into the accepted chute instead of being rejected.

Bonus points if you can name the currency shown in this video!

Hackaday: 3D Printed “Book” Demonstrates Mechanical Actions. “A book of mechanical actions is a wondrous thing — mechanically inclined children have lost collective decades pouring over them over the generations. What could possibly be better? Why, if the mechanisms in the book were present, and moved! That’s exactly what [AxelMadeIt] produced for a recent video.”

A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

Some comfort it would have been, could I, like a Faust, have fancied myself tempted and tormented of the Devil; for a Hell, as I imagine, without Life, though only diabolic Life, were more frightful: but in our age of Down-pulling and Disbelief, the very Devil has been pulled down, you cannot so much as believe in a Devil. To me the Universe was all void of Life, of Purpose, of Volition, even of Hostility: it was one huge, dead, immeasurable Steam-engine, rolling on, in its dead indifference, to grind me limb from limb.

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) Scottish essayist and historian
Sartor Resartus, Book 2, ch. 7 (1834)

This is how you make fridge magnets.

Apollo 13's magnetic moon toy. The strong magnet, combined with balls that aren't resistant to getting magnetised will eventually magnetise the whole 13 ball set. After that they start sticking to metal parts of the game, most notably the ball trough and won't come out.

While everyone remembers Apollo 13 from its namesake 13 ball multiball, its rocket ball lock is quite a cool feature too! The rocket catches the ball, starts rotating upright and then drops the locked ball onto a passage under the playfield. The huge LED 7-segment under it is also a cool detail and something Sega used later in Starship troopers.
