You would have to comb through the post-history, but the forum community, Web Hosting Talk, years ago had many angry people argue over the details of LiteSpeed Web Server.

did they at least clarify why it got cancelled?
If you have documentation of your intent to only cancel hosting and not the domain, it sounds like a breach of contract and it could still be worth trying to raise a dispute, or at the very least a public stink on various social networks (especially #WebHostingTalk forums (if they still exist) and Twitter could be worth raising awareness at).
I hope you don't have anything else with either #MediaTemple or #GoDaddy?
