Happy Tuesday.
The #Witchhazel flowers have opened once again.

Hamamelis Robert has orange/scarlet flowers and a nice scent.

Witch Hazel flower with a frozen drop. Their persistence in the cold is inspiring.

#BloomScrolling #WitchHazel

Witch Hazel flower with a frozen drop. A skinny brown branch extends personally at the top of the photo with several small clumps of icy snow. The center of the photo shows the flower with a cluster of maybe 8 thick yellow strands spreading out and hanging down. There is a mostly clear frozen drop of water attached to 2-3 of the yellow flower strands.

Closeup photo from the tree in our front yard. I love that these trees flower in November! I find it very cheerful.

Closeup of bright yellow witch hazel flower. A tight cluster of tiny blossom heads that each have maybe 8-10 bright yellow dangly threads waving.

Almost all the leaves are changing colors and I find it very interesting how the Magnolia’s leaves are still a saturated deep brilliant green!

In the background are the bright yellow leaves from the Witch Hazel.

Raindrops on the red new growth of common witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana)

Plants with new growth that is red indicates the presence of anthocyanins. The hypothesis is that anthocyanins either provide protection from UV light on new growth or prevent them from being eaten or both. Red leaves have high concentrations of both anthocyanins and tannins, the latter of which can disrupt digestive function in some species.

I really enjoy making a still life with the macro lens. Of course it has to be small and to have sufficient sharpness, I put the parts in 1 line. With this small (fake) delft blue vase I made two. I couldn't choose which one to take. In the first one I like the red of the berries, but there is also something to be said for the simplicity of the second. I just did them both. I'm curious which one you like best.

I do miss a few photographers on Instagram who are really good at still lifes. They only post still lifes and some of them make one every day. That was a huge inspiration. Maybe they are on Pixelfed too, but I haven't found them yet. But other than that I don't miss Instagram at all. Pixelfed feels more like a big photo club. And that most of them, like me, don't like Trump, is also very nice. 😀😀😀

It is a macro photo of a still life. On a black background, from left to right, there is first a small "delft blue" vase, with the ear on the left. In the vase, there is a twig with the yellow flowers of the hazel. Next to it is a smaller silver vase (or cap), dark discoloured, with the flat bottom facing forward. Next to it, upright, a weathered cork with a dark, silver cap. In the middle, in the foreground, three shiny red berries of the Aucuba.Another macro photo of a still life, again a black background, with on the left front a small delft blue vase with a small branch with yellow flowers of a hazel in it. Next to it an even smaller, silver vase (or maybe it is actually a cap) with in it a very small branch with yellow flowers of the hazel.

In the Autumn months, I always look forward to seeing the blooms of American Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana). On days where temperatures dip below freezing, the flowers close tightly to protect themselves from the cold and reopen when temps rise. The flowers are pollinated by short-tongued bees (35% of the species), long-tongued bees (25% of species), and flies (9% of species).

A picture of Witch Hazel, the awkward, but well-meaning witch from the Bugs Bunny cartoons. She's tending to her garden, which includes poison ivy, wolf bane, etc.

Witch hazels are blooming in my area. I snapped a nice macro lens shot showing a cluster of bright yellow flowers with the bright yellow flecks of pollen grains on the deep maroon bracts.
