I went to a visit to the heritage library of Antwerpen as a part of #wlic2023. I asked about the oldest book or document in their collection and the librarian said that was an important distinction. The oldest book is from the 11th century, very impressive already.
But the oldest document is from the Egyptian book of the dead and is about 4000 years older!

At a session on copyright in Europe at #wlic2023 and there was a comparison with the US. Copyright there is more flexible with fair-use instead of a list of exceptions but the damages in case of infringement are so absurd it scares people away from risking it.

Op #ifla #wlic2023 gaat het veel over AI & bibliotheken, oa rond de data ze hebben en gewild/ongewild beschikbaar stellen. Peter Bryant gaf een prachtig voorbeeld hoe je erkenning kunt geven aan de makers en data achter generative AI toepassingen: 'Most of the images in this presentation were created used Midjourney (an Al image generation platform). I acknowledge the creators and artists whose work has inspired and helped the platform learn.' En dan ook nog een fantastische Nick Cave quote ♥️.

At the opening ceremony of #wlic2023 and there's an interview with the Dutch minister of education, culture and science. When talking about the importance of conveying increasingly complex information he said "the nightmare scenario is a world where we're completely controlled by it but nobody understands it".
Couldn't help thinking about AI at that, a big theme at this conference.
