A spectacular day on the northeastern edge of the North York Moors above Robin Hood's Bay.

Taking in a few decent Bronze Age round barrows and the excellent Standing Stones Rigg/Ramsdale standing stones before dropping down to the coast at Boggle Hole for lovely tea and cake at the Youth Hostel, then along the coast path to Robin Hood's Bay.

The standing stones seem likely to have been part of a circle, although there are only three of them.

The face of the stone nearest the viewer is pockmarked with circular and sub-circular indentations. Some of these may be artificial cup-marks made by human hands, but they may all be the product of natural erosion before the stone was stood up on end. Two more stones are to the left and right, slightly further away; the stone on the left has tipped over and lies at an angle. The stone on the right is another slab with square corners, like a playing card standing up on its long side. Beyond the stones, the ground falls away to green fields. On the horizon a dip in the land reveals a blue sea between hills. It's a sunny day and the sky is clear.

Low sunlight filters through woodland in the centre, down to a shadowed cove where the viewer stands. A bridge, railings and a house can be seen dimly in the low light below the treeline. The sky is clear but the sun is too low in the sky to light the foreground.

Our accommodation: YHA Hartington Hall, a 17th-century manor house that became a youth hostel in 1934.

It's a spectacular building in the perfect place for accessing the Tissington and High Peak trails. This is the thing with youth hostels – they provide affordable accommodation for people to access the outdoors. And that's why it's so sad that YHA is closing 20 of its 150 hostels in England and Wales as it tries to make ends meet.
