8 Feb 1840 began the fight for the 8-hour working day in New Zealand. Samuel Parnell (pictured), a carpenter from London, insisted on 8 hours when offered a job, to which the employer had to agree, leading to more 8-hour day organising in the country stories.workingclasshistory.co

@ellie I only ever saw it on the Facebook page for "Office of Mayor and Council - City of Cambridge." I believe the offensive post Liggett was responding to was also on Facebook.

I sure didn't try it, but there were footprints and what looked like bike tire tracks?

Willow river park was beautiful this afternoon! It was so nice to go out and get some sun! #kitchener

#BikeNite A6: I don't take many photos when biking.

The oldest that's easily accessible is from the #Waterloo #CriticalMass ride in 2010, with many riders in costumes. The Transformer was skateboarding...

(Edit: the CriticalMass *Halloween* ride of course. They weren't all like that)

The most recent photo is of damage to a bike lane, probably from a car that pushed the concrete curb blocks into the bike lane. Not much good for protection from traffic, apparently.

People in colourful costumes sitting on a grassy field around some bikes. Prominently on the left is one person dressed as Optimus Prime, the Transformer. Their costume is made of large cardboard boxes, too big for bike riding, so they came on a skateboard. There are also people dressed as a banana, Little Bo Peep, Bill Watterson's Calvin (with a stuffed Hobbes), and Barney the dragon, among others.People in colourful costumes sitting on a grassy field around some bikes. I'm grateful to see Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett's response to a troubling post that another Cambridge councillor made yesterday. It's good to have civic leaders who stand up for people in our community.

#WaterlooRegion #CambridgeON

A letter which reads:

January 23, 2025

Generally, I do not speak out when a member of council past or present makes public comments on the radio, print media nor social media, but a recent social media post has been brought to my attention while I am out of the country. The implications within the meme have brought distress and pain to families and members of our community, therefore in this instance, and as Mayor, spokesperson, and leader of our community, I feel that this warrants a response. It does not represent council nor the corporation's thoughts on gender fluidity.

The world around us and within our own country is caught up with people being pitted against each other. In these uncertain times, we need to come together as a community, not tear each other apart. No one should have to wonder whether they are safe. Everyone living in, visiting, or working in our community deserves to know that they are not just safe but welcome, no matter their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or country of origin.

Pronouns are a form of grammatical identification, for some only that, but for others a means of personal identification, not something to be fearful of nor weaponized. As people, particularly our young people, try to navigate the world, this council, knowing that roots are where on starts from, has tried to ensure our young people are at the top of mind when making decisions.

(continued in next image)Acknowledging that there will never be a perfect response, my message is to those young people, while recognizing that differences of opinion can still exist; I want us to be known as a community who supports one another, stands against discrimination, creating a place where you and everyone can live authentically and without fear, that you may serve as an inspiration for others no matter where your path leads you. As a council we have created policies for that purpose, our staff then action them within our services, places and spaces, and all the while hoping the community embraces the same. I cannot begin to say I know how you feel so let us get that out of the way, but I can say you shouldn't have to feel bewilderment, anger, or fear. Sometimes adults learn through the grace of young people. I know that as leaders of a community we are not born with the knowledge of the role and we are imperfect creatures, but leaders are always in training.

Sincerely,

Jan Liggett

Mayor

I was hanging out at my local #library today when a librarian handed me a fresh cherry tomato. In the middle of January, in the middle of a polar vortex, the last thing I expected was to be given a fresh cherry tomato. It was delicious. I love the #Kitchener Public Library! #KPL

A poster reads as follows:

Aeroponic Tower Garden

Aeroponic gardening is a method of growing plants without soil. Plants need water, nutrients, air, and light to grow.

Plants in the Tower Garden have:

- the roots supported by eco-friendly rock fibre called rock wool.
- nutrients added directly to the water.
- a pump circulating water at regular intervals.
- lights that go on at night.

Advantages to Aeroponic Gardening:

- can grow food all year round.
- plants grow faster with fewer resources.
- plants don't need to grow extensive root systems.
- plants are healthier.Pea and tomato plants grow from a round white cylinder supported by a green pot. The cylinder has holes in it, which the plants are growing out of, it has rings around it that are holding up the plant, and it has tubes going out around it, which I assume are the lights for the plants. A cord runs from an outlet in a nearby pillar toward the pot with the cylinder with the plants growing out of it.

ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Pet Here's a petition about the right to repair. It says appliances should come with manuals and replacement parts and there should be a tax credit for appliance repairs. These are the kinds of things that would help us get more out of what we have instead of having to spend more of our personal money and our world's resources to enjoy the same products. Feels very #Solarpunk to me.

ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Pet Here's a petition to make sure Canadians' right to abortion won't get limited or overturned by a future political party. Every now and then I check the government of Canada's petitions website (ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Pet) to see if there are any petitions I want to sign. I feel like it's a fun, interactive way of learning what people are advocating for, and, if I want, letting the government who represents me know what I want them to do about the same issues. Here are some petitions I found this morning that I thought more people might want to sign... #Canada #CanadaPolitics
