Teach Honest History

Retired software engineer living in Virginia, USA, happily married, wildlife photography (mostly birds) is my main hobby. I support democracy and embrace diversity. I believe it is essential we teach honest history - the glorious & good as well as the ugly & evil. All photos mine except reposts

I can't be sure but I think this red-winged blackbird is flipping me the bird. Chantilly, Virginia, USA 30-May-2025. #birds #birdphotography #naturephotography

A male red-winged blackbird is perched on a horizontal branch against a backdrop of green foliage. The bird is supporting itself entirely on its left leg and foot, while the right leg and foot is pointed straight up and nearly touching its beak.

Going back to my roots, and sharing the very first pack of greeting cards I ever made:

goimagine.com/song-birds-greet

These were the first birds I felt deserved their own boxed set. I’m happy to say they’ve found their way into many happy homes in the last couple years. I still look back at these pieces with a kind of shock they came out of my hands.

I used Procreate to make these, and while these were made far before the advent of artificially generated slop, I’m proud to say I still do everything by hand with no “generative assistance” BS. These are all #HumanMade

I print, package, and post all of these myself from my own studio. No drop-shipping or POD companies. All me.

Went to the Natural History Museum in Oxford today and saw this.

It’s called the Torus of Time by Scottish artist Angela Palmer, and is made from rocks from all four nations of the UK, ranging from 3 billion year old Lewisian gneiss to a glacial boulder (2.5 million years - 10,500 years old).

If you look closely at the architectural columns around the museum, they are all similarly-labelled geological specimens, showing their origins eg, “The Lizard, Cornwall”. #geology #sculpture #museum

A circular doughnut shaped sculpture titled "Torus of Time" by Angela Palmer, featuring various colored stone segments. It is displayed on a stone base in a museum setting, with a background of geological artifacts and a tall column. A list of geological time periods is at the bottom with a key.

The oldest stone is at the bottom and in a clockwise direction they get younger before meeting the oldest again.

The stones are a range of colours from cream to brown to greenish to black.

I seldom venture into #B&W #photography, but this wind-ruffled crow and the shaggy lichen-covered tree spoke to me and said give it a try. Alexandria, Virginia, USA 23-May-2025. #birds #monochrome #birdphotography #naturephotography

A shaggy-looking crow, it's feathers ruffled in a brisk wind, holds a morsel of food in its beak. It is perched high up in a dead leafless tree whose branches are covered in lichen.

I’ll tell you why I post photos of beauty. Because while this corrupt admin floods the zone with cruelty & lawlessness— I refuse to allow them to flood my whole life. I still get to notice daily miracles & have joy & beauty and SO DO YOU. #resist

"Is it safe to go in the water? No Johnny, it is not!" At least not when critters like these are looking to take a chunk out of your leg. Snapping #turtle, Alexandria, Virginia, USA. 15-May-2025. #herp #herps #naturephotography

A half-submerged snapping turtle is seen in a shallow pond with a lot of tall green grass on the far shore. The turtle has lifted it's nose and head up out of the water, and part of the dome of its shell is also above water. The water is relatively still so there is a good reflection of the head and shell in the water in front of the turtle.

@somcak Yup, we are well and truly fucked. I have to assume when elections roll around, people will just ask their AI who to vote for. If they bother to vote at all.

Osprey on the prowl. I was hoping it would make a dive and catch, but apparently it didn't see anything to its liking. Huntley Meadows Park, Alexandria, Virginia, USA 15-May-2025. #birds #birdphotography #naturephotography

I have been ISO an indigo bunting for several years with no luck. Until today! Please celebrate with me as I cross this bird off my list. Huntley Meadows Park, Alexandria, Virginia, USA. 15-MAY-2025. #birds #birdphotography #naturephotography
