I've been having a blast with Winterheat Simplex Event! Racking up local contacts on VHF/UHF. It's a contest but it's also a fun "activation" practice for all skill levels.

@kim_harding I left the platform years ago when it became apparent that it was not about connecting me with the people in my life. I felt I was being manipulated on a daily basis and I did not like it.
Their attempts to maneuver me down a certain path was obvious and not at all appreciated. I grew tired of having to search for the posts created by my actual friends, often buried under polls, cat memes, and other tracking mechanisms. It seemed as though whomever re-posted the most third-party garbage was always rewarded.
Now, it's soon to become a bunch of chat bots making up stories about their fake experiences then liking one another's lies. Maybe this will finally be the end of it. The damage they've already done to society is immeasurable. If Meta went away tomorrow, we would all be better off.
@ZLabe Never seen this type of visual. Very cool!
It's time to start thinking about Winter Field Day. Check out what it takes to participate in this annual cold weather event:

@Tesseks Did it leave any clues in your logfiles?
I switched on the dehumidifier yesterday and find it to be very effective at improving indoor air quality and helping shake that cold, damp feel.
Two weeks of rain and gloom in San Jose. How do you do it, Seattle?
Cheap/free lumber season. Check your local Christmas tree lot, esp. at major retailers. Three years ago, I bought the lumber -- the remains of a Christmas Tree display made out of 4x6's and 2x4's -- for $100, and built an entire shed from scratch and had so much wood left over I gave the rest to a friend for free. It required 4 hours with a power drill to remove all the screws in the wood in parking lot (and multiple trips), but it was well worth the effort. You may just find they are going to throw the whole thing in the waste bin out back, talk to the manager. #bargain #tips #scavenging #lumber #diy
Happy #winterSolstice ! It's all uphill from here!
@gesus I'm desperate to switch completely to Linux but, for reasons like yours, my productivity suffers every time I try, and eventually I have to bail out due to frustration and the urgency of getting things done. But I keep trying and eventually I think it will stick.
I recently switched to the #Mozilla #Thunderbird email client and I'm amazed at how polished and complete it has become. I used it for many years during its early development, then I stepped away and forgot about it. It's very robust, even has integrated support for #OpenPGP Very nice!
#Introduction Hi #fediverse ! We’re the European Southern Observatory, and we design, build and operate ground-based telescopes.
One of them is our Extremely Large Telescope, currently under construction in #Chile. It will have a 39 m mirror, and its rotating enclosure will weigh 6100 tonnes, or about 700 mastodons!
We’re looking forward to chatting with all of you about #astronomy

@AAKL @WIRED @agreenberg They're a stupid waste of resources. Traditional plates are completely recyclable and last for decades vs hackable e-waste crap that will fail before the car is paid off and likely won't be disposed of properly when they do.
@nixCraft I can't help but wonder where this goes... AI generates garbage that gets published and indexed then used to train future models. The internet is now consuming its own excrement.
@drrjv Congratulations! Welcome to the world of amateur radio. Your wallet will never be the same.
Nice job on knocking out two tests in one sitting. That's the way to do it! I did General and Extra in one sitting and glad I did, because I probably would never have gotten Extra otherwise.
It's a joyful hobby and a great community to be a part of. Have fun!
Nothing like a tornado to get people talking.
@mike Congratulations!
@dplattsf The tell-tale hook! Not a doppler image want to see in my neighborhood.
@JustGo on #Android I use, My Lightning Tracker Pro, it lets me know when there is lightning within 20-miles.
It doesn't give you much heads up, but it helps me when I'm home and have a few minutes to disconnect things
there is a free version with ads, but I like the ad-free version:
