Nassim Taleb with some thoughts on how AI is affecting the labour market.

In the past, technology caused employment to move up on the sophistication scale. Technology provided the muscle, people did more and more of the thinking. Today, Al is forcing people to move down into low tech and perhaps menial jobs. 2/ But a few, very few, will manage to use technology for leverage --few programmers, few doctors, few scientists. Expect more inequality.

Wachtkamer, Haarlem Centraal. Direct Watercolor. 20"x16", 140lb. Arches Cold Press.

#directwatercolor #watercolor #watercolour #aquarelle #aquarel #aquarela #art

Watercolor painting of a cafe on the platform area of the Haarlem Centraal train station in Haarlem, Netherlands. A large stone building sets along a platform below a bright gray sky, exposing structural beams. On the left of the building is a gated, Arches entry to the old 3rd class seating area - the upstairs windows darked and lightly reflecting back the sky. To the right is a wooden and glass encased facade to a cafe. Arched dark mahogany windows and doors open to a brightly lit interior in orange and yellow, its upper windows are bright in reflection of the gray sky. Before the blue and gray stone facade is a tiled, purple and dark gray platform for travelers to stand.

Despicable

May be a Twitter screenshot of pen and text that says 'lizzie johnson @lizzi... 1h I was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. have no words. I'm devastated. lizzie johnson 1/25/26 Waking up without power, heat, or running water. (Again.) But the work here in Kyiv continues. Warming up in the car, writing in pencil pen ink freezes by headlamp. Despite how difficult this job can be, am proud to be a foreign correspondent at The Washington Post.'

#ScribesAndMakers 4: Our next featured creator is a comic artist. Tell us about a comic strip or web comic you enjoy.

Keeping in theme with the sorts of stories I talk about here, one of my favorite webcomics is Curvy (link is to the first episode). Of Curvy, TV Trops says:

Anaïs Phalèse is an Ordinary High-School Student, who plays softball and worries about passing her Physics class. One day she meets Fauna Lokjom, Despoina (Princess) of Candy World. Anaïs helps Fauna flee from the bad guys who are chasing her. They flee from reality to reality. They are chased by the minions of Prince Boglox of Stupid World, and by Fervid Wexler, a Federal Agent who believes that Anaïs and Fauna are terrorists.

At least in the beginning, it's Adults Only mainly for art and themes. It's a lot of fun. The original run ended in 2019 but apparently there have been updates since then.

This makes me sad (been there). From Joe Menn at WaPo: "Most of the Washington Post’s tech reporters were laid off today, including me. I have loved my time at the paper, which is where I wanted to work from age 15. I take some consolation in not being among the survivors who will have to work harder with less for fewer readers. On to better things."

In Japan, Valentine's Day usually involves women giving men chocolate - and, in many instances, making it from scratch. Here's why an increasing number of women – and even some chocolate companies – are calling hooey on this tradition.

people might joke but this is where the IT industry is headed and nobody is safe. it doesn't matter if you are good or bad, you are just another commodity. just look at how many engineering jobs were cut in the past 18 months. Oracle is now reporting it will cut 30k jobs. there is no regulation in place and by the time our politicians wake up there will be nothing left. once it was a thriving industry and now it is on the brink of collapse. the change is real whether you like it or not

a screenshot of a socail media thread with two posts that joke about the IT career path in the age of AI. Eliana (@eliana_jordan) writes:

2024: prompt engineer
2025: vibe coder
2026: master of ai agents
2027: unemployed

ENSIGN FLANDRY (1978)
Acrylic on illustration board - 26” x 16”

Dominic Flandry debuted in print way back in 1966, a decade before I worked on ACE reprints of the series. Early in my career, I was often paired with established authors like Poul Anderson. 1/4

A man in silver spacesuit with bubble helmet peers out off the deck of a traditional wooden sailing ship. He's ruggedly handsome with tousled golden hair, chiseled high cheekbones, and sharp panhandle sideburns. He holds a laser rifle pointed up and at the ready while his knee knifes forward over the rail. He appears poised for action. Next to him stands a lithe alien woman with long raven hair falling over russet, black-striped fur. She holds a long, slender sword at waist height, sliding her offhand up the curving blade. Yellow highlights bristle around her eye in wide outline. In profile, the ring takes the shape of an eagles head with beak descending down over her cheek. She is unclothed except for boots and a belt crossed over her chest. Gold ornament and jewels, however, drape her chest. Other aliens of her race rush to the edge of the ship, the first wielding a trident and snarling to expose pointed teeth.

People have become far too used to Ukrainians dying.

@olgatokariuk
It is shocking how little coverage there is of an
unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine due to
Russia's destruction of its energy grid. It's -20C
outside and half of the country experienced a total
blackout today. Metro trains stopped operating in Kyiv
and Kharkiv today. Rolling blackouts have been
ongoing for weeks, often with no heating and running
water inside people's houses. People get sick and die
because of this. In the meantime, Russians laugh and
call for more strikes to punish Ukraine for its
unwillingness to surrender. These are strikes affecting
millions of civilians amid the harshest winter in
decades. These are crimes against humanity that
Russia is confident it will get away with. We cannot let
that happen

At some point in your Lord Of The Rings journey, you realize you aren't an Elf (beautiful, noble, elegant), you're a Dwarf (short, loud, fun) or a Hobbit (short, hungry, trying to avoid people), but never a human, ughhh, never a human.
