@gvlx @wallabag @yunohost

I get your idea of a browser taking care of its core use, good point. I think that Firefox' extensions are one of its greatest strengths. (Striking example: When Google announced the degradation of uBlock Origin on Chrome...) On the other hand: Convenient integration of features like web search have been important for folks to stick with browsers, instead of only using apps, right?

Feedbro: Yes, I once tried and liked it. Though desktop only, unfortunately.

Exactly the same here, for the reasons mentioned. See toot below. And since long before #Pocket folded.
For self hosting @wallabag , I'm using my @yunohost instance. Works like a charm.

By the way: I'm still attached to #Firefox on every platform, since many years... Colour me naive, but still hoping for Firefox native integration of RSS/ATOM subscriptions and bookmarking. For these are just the things you need and do in a web browser, right?

Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

Invest in Open Infrastructure (#IOI, @investinopen) makes an important point in its new report:
investinopen.org/state-of-open

"Imagine just a few of the major open infrastructures serving scholarship today: #arXiv, #PubMed, #DSpace, #OpenJournalSystems, or perhaps #CreativeCommons…Consider how many of these have been created on a cycle of grants and sustained on a combination of donations, membership fees, service hosting, and/or specialized development…Most scholars, teachers, and researchers…accept them as a given and depend on them…But these infrastructures are not, on the whole, sustainable businesses with robust fiscal models and diversified revenues. Many do not turn profits; most operate at steady losses that are absorbed by philanthropic and government funders and a variety of research institutions including labs, universities, and colleges. They operate on systems rife with technical debt, and they depend upon volunteer labour to cover much of their human costs from governance to editorial review to code development."

"Für viele Expertinnen und Experten ist klar: Wenn Open Source das Fundament der digitalen Welt bildet, braucht es Schutz, Förderung und vor allem nachhaltige Strukturen. Es ist längst mehr als ein Nerd-Hobby. Es ist eine politische, gesellschaftliche Realität. Unsere digitale Infrastruktur beruht auf der freiwilligen Arbeit von Menschen, die oft unsichtbar bleiben – und kaum Unterstützung erfahren."

#Google putting wrong medical advice in their #AI Overviews.

This is not funny. It is not acceptable. Today I saw someone who had asked a health-related question to Google Search. The AI Overview presented mixed-up, wrong information. I urged the person to ignore the AI Overview and use the regular site links.

They didn't know there were any regular site links, because the AI Overview filled essentially their entire window and they didn't know to scroll down. This is a common situation with busy, nontechie users.

They have depended on Google to point them at accurate information for so many years, and now Google Search spews out convincing looking AI garbage. This is not an anomaly.

Google's AI Overviews are full of wrong, partially wrong (even more dangerous!), and just plain misinformation. Answers that are completely reversed from supposed source pages because the AI didn't understand the wording. Measurements wrong. Math wrong.

It doesn't matter how often AI Overviews are correct, because you NEVER KNOW when they're going to be wrong, either completely or partly (again, mixing true with false -- like contaminating a well).

And now Google is trying to convince users to use "AI Search" instead -- "Hey Ma', no more list of blue links!" -- making it even harder to see that so many of their answers are, if you'll excuse the expression, bulls*it, sometimes dangerous as well.

This is unconscionable. Frankly, whether Google understands this or not, this behavior is uncaring and evil. Apparently Google's leadership no longer feels any shame at all. Disgusting.

My Visiting International Fellowship in 2025 at UVic Libraries, Canada

I am thrilled to have been invited as a visiting international fellow at the University of Victoria (UVic) Libraries, Canada, from July to September 2025. UVic Libraries are about to start something new in September 2025: Kula: Library Futures Academy, a library-based institute of advanced studies.

TIB's commitment towards Open Science means we build and maintain networks with libraries and research institutions all over the world. The current threat to the availability of research data is a strong reminder about the importance of international cooperation.

During my stay in Victoria, I will contribute to UVic Libraries' and KULA's understanding and implementation of Open Science and Citizen Science, related practices and community engagement. I'll present and discuss in workshops, meetings, knowledge sharing coffee events, a podcast, and more. I'll also take a closer look at a few more Open Science-related activities in other places in Canada, mostly in nearby Vancouver and Montreal.

Keep an eye out for more updates. (Mostly on my Mastodon, Bluesky, and LinkedIn.) During my stay in Canada, I'll hold my position at TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology. When you're in Canada, feel free to give me a shout - we could meet up for coffee at UVic. If you're in Europe and want to get in touch, just bear in mind that there's a nine-hour time difference. So, when it's 09:00 in Victoria (UTC-7) in the summer, it's 18:00 in Germany (UTC+2).

@tjowens This quote really stood out:

"...research led by historians at The Alan Turing Institute in London, United Kingdom, revealed that searching the British Library’s digitized newspaper collection for information about life during the Industrial Revolution would return politically biased results. The reason: OCR was better at reading the fonts favored by more expensive and conservative papers than those used by less expensive, liberal ones."

Just for the record: In Berufen mit hoher Belastung lebt man drei Jahre kürzer, mit prekären Einkommen sinkt die Lebenserwartung deutlich.
