Seed #ferns experimented with complex leaf vein networks 201 million years ago phys.org/news/2024-04-seed-fer

Parallel #evolution of angiosperm-like venation in Peltaspermales: a reinvestigation of Furcula nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/do

"the net-like leaf veining typical for today's flowering #plants developed much earlier than previously thought, but died out again several times"

A speculative artistic reconstruction of Furcula granulifer, a prehistoric plant.

Our new work has been published in New Phytologist. We reinvestigate the 201 Ma old Furcula, a #fossil #leaf with net-like hierarchical venation, and suggest this was a relative of the Peltaspermales experimenting with angiosperm-like #leaves (with little success) before flowering plants. This was only one of many natural #experiments highlighting the unique case of the success of #angiospems

I got an email today saying that my first solo author paper has been printed: a side project I did on the variability of vertebral laminae in Plateosaurus 🪅🎉🍾 -I wasn't prepared for this dropping on #FossilFriday- I can only share some of the figures.

Interesting observation: talked to a few communicators recently who said that not knowing a subject helps them write better popular science articles.
With researchers it’s quite the opposite I feel: they think they can only do about a subject they know extremely well. Thoughts?

Not everybody can move.

Not everybody should move.

You don't get to judge.

It says a lot when your response to "there's a fascist state next door" is to tell someone "oh, just don't live in the fascist state."

Easy. As if that would fix everything.

Just don't live there. Pack up your bags, pay movers with your nonexistent money, go on a road trip with your car, and leave your family behind.

It's telling how quick some people are to give ground.

Like phylogenies? This paper may be of interest - we use simulations show that timescaling of phylogenies is not severely hampered by inaccuracies in placement of fossils on the tree of life.

Determinants of accuracy in fossil placement and node age estimates.
Top (in blue) plot showing the average frequency of correct fossil placement (frequency increasing with greater depth of blue colour), varying with relative age on the horizontal axis (root to the left and tips to the right) and proportion of missing data on the vertical axis.
Lower left: short plot above shows the average magnitude of absolute error in age estimates for nodes at different depths, error increases with node depth (right to left), stabilizing halfway between root and tips of tree. Larger plot underneath shows average error in absolute node age estimates.
Lower right: short plot above (green/pink bars) shows proportions of nodes with true ages outside 95% HPD (highest posterior density); green bars show age overestimates; pink bars age underestimates. Larger plot below shows relative error in age estimates for nodes at different depths.
