Woof. There’s a lot of discussion on here today about class attendance policies, and let me just say that I love nothing more than fanciful theories with no basis in praxis or practicality.

December staff meeting underway and talking about Mastodon! No platform is going to be perfect - but can’t ignore the growing presence of community here.

What is the scholarship equivalent of a novella? I’d like to write and read short books that are both more developed and detailed than an article but shorter than a regular monograph. Are there examples of this kind of thing being regularly published by someone? #AcademicToots #AUPresses #ScholarlyPublishing #UniversityPresses #HigherEd #histodons
@brianleechphd Forerunners at U of Minnesota Press a possible example. https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/series/forerunners-ideas-first
We also publish lecture series @uncpress that include some works of this length and are suggestive of what you can do with the form.
Hi! #introduction time: I'm an acquisitions editor in #scholarlypublishing, acquiring in #Ohio regional titles, 19th century American #history (including #CivilWar), #fashion history, #sports history, peace & conflict studies, #Tolkien & Inkling studies, etc. I love being part of #aupresses, dispelling myths abt university press publishing, and getting distracted by people's pets on zoom calls
Hopkins Press is #hiring! We are now accepting applications for Publishing Operations Assistant and Program Coordinator: People Culture & Equity. For details on these and all our current openings: https://www.press.jhu.edu/careers/current-openings
Just a normal weekend in Sandhills North Carolina

Imagine being an #LGBTQ employee at HarperCollins, maybe a dream job in #publishing, already dealing with wage issues and your (necessary) union walk out, and then an imprint/editor brags about acquiring the project of a man who popularized Don't Say Gay, for I'm sure millions of dollars. I'm really sorry for those employees.
I started an infinity bottle of #whisky about six months ago, just pouring off the last shot or two of whatever I’m finishing. I have been sloppy about keeping track but decided to pour a taste tonight. Wee bits of scotch and bourbon taste very nice together it turns out!
One thing I love about Mastodon at present: clean slate of sports followers and follows means I can completely ignore #TarHeels meltdowns in football and men’s bball this weekend 😱
Update on the domestic terror attack in NC:
"Working at the Eastwood power substation off Daubs Chapel Road, Aubin Reynolds, a system planning engineer with Randolph Electric Membership Corp., said that whoever attacked the power stations was familiar with the the power company and how the stations were all connected to each other"
I'm noticing a lot of "I'm bored of Mastodon, I'm going back to #Twitter" posts.
In case they are genuine, here's what I've found works:
⚫ try to post content, not complaints. People want to engage with you, not your gripes
⚫ try to learn. If you're putting in an effort to be part of the community, the community will welcome you
⚫ Try to avoid posting links to tweets, definitely don't cross-post. People want Mastodon content
⚫ Reply! Reply! Reply! Everyone wants to know someone's reading and considering their content, even you
⚫ Don't lurk. Many of us check for a filled out profile, avatars, and posts, before we follow someone back
⚫ Chill. It's a big new world that doesn't serve everything up to you
⚫ Avoid the trap of rebuilding Twitter here
Feel free to link this post to people struggling with Mastodon. It's what I've found works, and may not work for everyone
@fiveoclockbot welcome friend
I’m just an editor, looking at a new platform, wondering if #aupresses folk, scholars in fields incl but not limited to #bookstudies, #printculture, #lgbtq studies/activism, African American studies, #americanstudies, #EnvironmentalStudies, #environmentalhistory, and other fields in which UMass Press publishes are… here somewhere?
