The Stockholm Tolkien Society's Book Guild still follows the meeting format I established as a young Guildmaster over 30 years ago. And the attendees are largely the same! ♥️

"’Since when has the Lord of Gondor been answerable to thee?' said Denethor. 'Or may I not command my own servants?'

'You may,' said Gandalf. ‘But others may contest your will, when it is turned to madness and evil.’”

++++
Gandalf gives us something to consider, namely when we should contest the will of an appointed authority.

If you wish, you can get a dim glint of Williams's light in "That Hideous Strength". I felt as if I'd seen a glimpse of something saner, something happier and calmer and joyous and...not C. S. Lewis's doing at all. But I believed at first that Lewis had something to do with it.

But I return to Prof. #Tolkien and #Arthur and the dreadful thing he does in "The Fall of Arthur", which I have not yet brought myself to read. He comes up with a terrifyingly involuted, necrotic sort of interpretation. Launcelot for some reason is totally out of this picture, and all the blame for the destruction of Camelot is heaped solely on Mordred, who is made out to be a wolfish, bestial figure, consumed with depraved lust for Guinevere.

It is WRONG. It is not supported by anything and surely Tolkien wrote this in despair over his "best friend" (according to Douglas Gresham) Clive Staples Lewis, who...better fits the type of "wolfish and bestial". Lewis had Problems™.

It was a spectacularly BAD idea because of something I didn't know anything about, and wouldn't find out until maybe a month ago at the earliest, for sure. I maybe came across some earlier reminders during my period of lunacy, which I cannot clearly recall.

(*sighs*)

#Tolkien wrote a DREADFUL take on Arthur. But he didn't publish it! It was his most secret shame and it did not come to light until 2013 when Christopher Tolkien was probably digging up every square inch of his father's property, looking for any hidden bits and bobs that could be turned into money.

Christopher Tolkien. My face is making the sour-lemon expression...I don't wanna go there right now.

There's a mystery here that yet eludes me and perhaps this is not for me to know, anyway: whether Tolkien knew, in his heart, that his work was *wrong*. Subtly wrong, just twisted enough to be unfit for print. I think he did.

A really interesting analysis of modern day fantasy literature... and why it's not good

This is Why We Never Got Another Lord of the Rings | The Second Story

Got a driving lesson this morning. Dreading it, literally gut wrenching anxiety. I hate this so much. I'm so SICK of doubting myself.

So, I'll try to be my own Samwise today...encouraging and enthusiastic self talk, and carrying myself with strength and determination!

Tolkien imagined a complex set of names for each letter or Tengwa: alphabetic names, different in each languages and modes, and a 'full name' a Quenya word used in every languages as a loanword to designate the letter.

The full name of hwá was hwesta "breeze" in Quenya.

The letter called hwá in Quenya was named chwae in Sindarin (Noldorin), and in real Common Speech it was akha, later aha (as in Rohan).

I am changing and adjusting the position of some of the diacritical marks (called tehtar in Quenya).

Also Toshi decided to have two forms for the Tengwa rómen, a special one when having under dots. I prefer when only one single form is used.

Tolkien inspires naming of four peregrine falcons

Excellent floof, and an interesting naming scheme thanks to community involvement. Presumably they, like Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains, won't fly into Mordor casually.

Having still not read the books....I really get the impression ses really WERE supposed to be rabbit people down to almost every detail, not just Short Kings with hair on the top of their feet?

At the very least, every aspect of their society seems rabbit-based, and obviously the name too. I've heard of that "I used to think they were rabbits" post and honestly it seems like "they're men" is the misinterpretation?
