Today is my first birthday on Mastodon.
I switched instances quickly. These older posts were lost, so I'm not sure of the date.

Coincidentally I joined just days before I (accidentally) lost my account with lots of photos on Instagram. I had been turned off by Instagrams ongoing shittification already and was looking for a better platform. Didn't ever look back, except for a few friends I lost among my followers.

I find the Fediverse a friendly and safe space, but also a bubble. I don't post/share a lot about politics or societal issues, as I would probably preach to the choir....

Instead, I mainly focus on photography. I did not succed much to discuss isues that touch the history or philosophy of image-making. Probably should try harder. But despite of having gone from almost a thousand followers on Instagram to 160, I have more and better interactions with you.

I want to thank everyone for their support - likes, boosts, comments or following. It's a joy for me to share with you!

Ice on a shallow pond
Partially frozen brook in a forest

I was always fascinated by ice and the transformations it brought to nature.

German winters have become much warmer, so I had to wait several years for a with the right conditions: no snow and cold enough to freeze a brook. Finally, in February and March 2018, first the ponds were freezing, than thawing, and finally it became very cold. The light changed very quickly, but I I got several days to workuntil my hands were to numb to operate my camera.
It became the first book I (unsuccessfully) self-published, and part of a group exhibition.

Wangerooge Westturm Lighthouse in Purple Fog, 1988

I couldn't see most of the East-Frisian island of Wangerooge, when I had to visit it in November 1988...

The Westturm (west tower) lighthouse, part of a youth hostel, was built in 1932, it's historic predecessors destroyed by the sea.

Red beech tree with multiple branches

This amazing beech tree grows in a "Hutewald" - an ancient common forest pasture. Cows from a nearby village were put to graze among the trees - pigs to fatten on acorns and beechnuts. This prevented the rejuvenation of the forest. The bites of the grazing animals often caused bizarre growth of the remaining trees. In this case, just multiple branches. Even cednturies after their last use, these common pastures still can be recognized.

"Photography" translates as "painting with light".
Counterlight (or backlight), with its stark contrasts, is challenging. In combination with trees in fall colors, it gives spectacular images. Light even becomes the (secret) main subject.

Halloween 3 - The Selkie

Still another eerie image for halloween, this time a photography of a mummified young seal found at a beach.

"Selkie" refers to a Scottish tale. Selkies are (female) seals that hide their skin in order to live with a human lover/husband. But they always need to return to their skin, to be able to return to their own folks.
