By the way, if the migration doesn't work properly (it should!), I'm now going to be @RolloTreadway@neurodifferent.me

But don't click follow on that just yet (if you already follow me), fingers crossed your follow should be automatically moved.

Right. I think I'm going to (finally) attempt moving to a new instance this afternoon.

Hopefully I will reappear as normal. But if I don't, please assume that I've fallen through a portal into a netherworld, and all future communication between us will be in the medium of me haunting you.

If anyone has any tips for a smooth migration, now would be a good time.

real ufo

floating-head: This is the dumbest thing to nitpick but the phrase “real UFO” bothers me any UFO i a real UFO as long as it’s unidentified and flying because that’s what those words mean weather or not it’s an alien s a different matter it could be a pancake someone threw real hard as long as you don’t know that’s what it is it's a UFO

thezohar: i've said it before, and ill say it again: anything is a UFO if you're bad enough at identifying stuff

Do not reply on Twitter.

To avoid funding those people who spew hate - Musk has made it if you counter their message you are funding their hate.

This is just another of a long move to remove actual speech and silence opposition to the right wing hate speech Musk favors.

Already speaking up results in a deluge of hate and stupidity, this will make it worse and embolden the worst to make the hottest takes/most hate.

If you think you may be the victim of 'financial abuse' have a look at this website for help...

as Clear Barrett points out in the FT today, it can be a bit like boiling a frog, you may have found your partner has slowly gathered together more & more practical & emotional control over you finances and may be not only be using this to control you but also be driving you into #debt...

If you're not sure, why not check as 1 in 6 #women are being abused this way...

Horse series. I spent a few years working with these horses on a voluntary basis so that I could gain there trust to photograph them in their natural habitat

It's 2023. "Gosh, we didn't realize how people would misuse this" just isn't believable anymore.

Bare minimum, with any new tech:
1) How would a stalker use this?
2) What will 4chan do with this?

And don't release, not even as alpha or beta, before mitigating those risks.

@doot True, but the other side of this is that a bunch of the most tiresome people around consider themselves to be 'eccentric' and the local 'character'.

And this is encouraged! Because Britain!

(Well, it's encouraged if they're posh, anyhow.)

2023-02-02

@ianbetteridge (can't lie, most of this I've just copypasted from something I posted about yesterday, I'm too lazy to actually write it out again.)

2023-02-01

@northfolk Exactly. Work is work, public services are public services, and in both cases you have to go wherever you can get what you need.

2023-02-01

(and also, yes, it is a load of shit that bus companies have become so reliant on a platform over which they have no control; on far too many occasions, I've seen a bus on the app which never appears, and had to find out via Twitter that the bus never actually existed, it's apparently impossible(!) to get their own app to carry information such as 'is this bus real'.)

2023-02-01

(hell, for the first year or so that I was on Twitter, way back when, I literally used it *only* to get public transport information. Didn't interact with anyone.)

2023-01-30

Interesting article, but this jumped out at me (screenshot because of character limits). Buses are essential, not just to passengers like me, but for the economy, and any plans we might have to reduce car dependency.

Yet they're completely ignored. Both politics and journalism are full of people who rarely if ever use the bus. Remember Jeremy Corbyn asking a question about improving bus services, and the Tory benches all laughing at him?

inews.co.uk/news/bbc-told-that

Text: The report also said bus travel was under-reported compared to aviation and “big, shiny new railways” because editors consider some modes of public transport are “boring.”

The authors said: “Boring to you, maybe, if you don’t take the bus. Make them interesting – they’re of interest to passengers… There are more journeys by bus than any other form of public transport.”

It also doesn't help that I find it *very* difficult to sit still for an hour. This is why I don't go in for birdwatching, as much as I love birds.

2023-01-28

Not the best hour of birds. Disappointed that the collared dove couple didn't turn up, nor the blue tit that I've seen around occasionally, and only the male in the blackbird couple arrived (and he came very early to eat the berries I'd put out). Conditions were far from ideal, though, not least the drilling and hammering a few doors down.

There were about twenty starlings watching over the street, but I felt they were a little too far away from my garden to count.

#birds #BigGardenBirdwatch

A semicircle divided into segments, half of a pie chart, showing bird numbers. The largest segment is labelled starling (about a third of the total), house sparrow and carrion crow are both about a sixth, and blackbird, magpie, robin, woodpigeon and commongull a twelfth each. The chart is labelled Your top 8 birds.

@doot This kind of nonsense leaves me not wanting to buy any appliances ever again. In ten years' time, I'll be living in a hut, trying to light a fire, and telling myself 'at least I don't have an internet-enabled box of matches'.

2023-01-25

#today I have been missing Twitter. But I'm not going back there. The Twitter I miss doesn't exist any more. And I like it here anyway.

But I miss the good times, and the people I knew on there who for one reason or another aren't using Mastodon.

It is a tech version, I suppose, of a feeling that we Welsh call 'hiraeth': a longing for a time and place in which you were once content, and which perhaps never truly existed at all.
