#SensoryGating helps animals to distinguish threatening & non-threatening stimuli. This study reveals a mechanism whereby #cadherin 16 (cdh16)-dependent changes in the corpuscle of Stannius regulate whole-body #calcium homeostasis & sensory gating in #zebrafish @PLOSBiology plos.io/4m8XZA2

Top Left: cdh16 is expressed in the corpuscles of Stannius (CS) during embryonic and larval development. At 120 hpf, cdh16 is expressed in the corpuscles of Stannius (red box). Background signal is observed elsewhere, including in the eyes and head. Bottom left: cdh16 signal is present in the CS and kidney from 48 hpf to 120 hpf, but by 144 hpf cdh16 signal is present in the CS but is no longer detectable in the kidney. Top right: Proposed model. In wild type animals, Cdh16 suppresses stc1l expression in the corpuscles of Stannius. This limits the ability of Stc1l to suppress the function of Papp-aa, allowing for some proliferation and function of ionocytes. As a result, Ca2+ is taken up from the environment and normal acoustic startle thresholds are maintained. Bottom right: In cdh16 mutant animals, suppression of stc1l expression is relieved and stc1l is overexpressed. This results in hyper-inhibition of Papp-aa. As a result, Ca2+ uptake is severely limited, animals are hypocalcemic, and acoustic response thresholds are lowered.

My department is hiring! Permanent faculty job (research + teaching) in applied maths. Mathematical biology would be highly appropriate. We're a friendly department in a large university in central London, recently merged with a big medical school. Apply by 1st June. jobs.ac.uk/job/DMY889/lecturer

Looks like the #UKgovernment have come up with an interesting side-step on the (ongoing and self-created) sticky issue of the removal of L7 (Master's level) #UnionApprenticeships by deciding they should only be available to people <21

And there was me thinking age was a protected characteristic...

Realistically, I see this as having a chance of being useful if it was <25 getting folk to L7 by 21 is going to be a push (although a potential boon for graduate recruitment)

What's particularly interesting is that whilst the sector is acutely aware of the potential impact of technology (ie #AI) on their futures, there is a strong recognition/expectation that #apprentices on our course will have firm foundation in the basic principals of effective #DoubleEntryBookkeeping as well as advanced knowledge of #TaxLaw and legislation so that they can add value to any work that technology might be assisting them with. This seems entirely sensible to me!

Had a great session on Monday this week involving some lovely people from the #Accountancy trade and linked to the #InstituteofFinancialAccountants #IFA

We're working up a new #Degree #Apprenticeship programme using the Accounting #Finance Manager standard: instituteforapprenticeships.or and are gathering input and insight from local employers about how to build a comprehensive, accessible and valuable programme of study that means they have futureproof skills in their businesses.

Ever needed a graceful way to say "no"?

This tiny API returns random, generic, creative, and sometimes hilarious rejection reasons perfectly suited for any scenario: personal, professional, student life, dev life, or just because.

Built for humans, excuses, and humor.

@MikeFromLFE @ChrisMayLA6 The course has been designed hand-in-hand with #NHS colleagues and is closely tied to their workforce plan.

(Even though I'm biased) it's an excellent representation of how close collaboration with employers, combined with our skill in building courses that meet apprenticeship standards, can generate tangible benefits for employers and the people they serve (in this instance children with potential hearing issues).

The NHS needs a better workforce plan:

Mammography; vacancy rates - 17.5% for screening mammographers, nearly 20% for symptomatic mammographers;

Diagnostic Radiography - vacancies up from 12% to 13% over the past year, alone;

Clinical Radiology; 31% shortfall projected to rise to 41% within five years.

all of which leads to delays in diagnosis & treatment & worse patient outcomes!

The NHS is not holding on to, or appointing enough doctors!

@MikeFromLFE @ChrisMayLA6 Afaict it's still happening.

Just yesterday I cleared the final administrative hurdle to be able to offer a (highly) specialist #apprenticeship programme for #PaediatricAudiologists to enhance the skills of the workforce already in place and help bring up folk working in the area who want to progress their careers.

Publicity materials and website are being updated atm, but if anyone wants to know any more right now, then just get in touch with me.

@ChrisMayLA6 Much appreciated, thanks Prof.

Any employer with any sort of sense of purpose (beyond just the bottom line) has an incredible opportunity, through apprenticeships, to drive meaningful & lasting change.

My career has moved from Youth Work, to HE Widening Participation to Apprenticeships, I believe I've done more, for the people I was trying to enable with #apprenticeships than I could have in the first 2.

We see so many 'rough diamonds' shine with the right chances!

2025-04-23

@ChrisMayLA6 BTW, anyone who employs people in England and thinks:

'yeah, I could offer #apprenticeships for people from 'non-traditional' backgrounds'

lemme know.

Broadening access to advanced skills development is entirely my bag, I want to work with you.

2025-04-23

@ChrisMayLA6 IMO the single best line in that piece is:

Pay “We have a pay differential of no more than 12 times [higher than] the lowest paid.”

The only way to assure that a rising tide carries all ships.

@jon Oooh London - Milan (or Ashford - Milan) would be awesome!

@jon What a magnificent station, infrastructure with intent!

2025-03-24

@jon Please include in your assessment the odds that they'll be any easier to deal with for cyclists trying to get on to the mainland than Eurostar!

2025-03-21

@jon The data may be accessible elsewhere, but the pleasure of feeling totally l33t by getting it in a terminal is entirely worth it.
