Sea defences project creates new work opportunities
The Knights Brown workforce – including sub-contractors – attached to Swansea Council’s Mumbles coastal protection project has numbered up to 100 every day.
Among them are a number of workers hired by the firm during the course of the scheme.
Once complete, the council says the strengthened sea wall and improved prom will protect the community for generations to come and attract many thousands of visitors.
Knights Brown apprentices Porsche Demery and Brandon Worth are among those to have worked on the Mumbles coastal protection project.Apprentice civil engineer Porsche Demery, aged 18, of Morriston, said: “I’m proud to be working on such an important project.
“There are always challenges as with any major scheme, there are problems to solve and a huge range of tasks to complete. Every day’s different.
“I’m excited to be part of the construction industry – it has a wide range of jobs and helps people develop a wide range of skills.”
Apprentice quantity surveyor Brandon Worth, aged 22, of Port Talbot, said: “My role with Knights Brown has allowed me to make a real-life impact on the Mumbles coastal protection scheme.
“I’ve been able to broaden my skillset and I’m being treated really well by everybody here – the Knights Brown workforce is really supportive.
“I was attracted to the industry because it offers the ability to make towns and cities more inviting and environmentally friendly.”
Council cabinet member Andrew Stevens, said: “It’s great to see new work skills being developed on our Mumbles project.
“It illustrates that local communities are benefiting from the scheme, by getting people into work.
“I thank Knights Brown, our main contractors, working with us to create a number of new posts to help them deliver this scheme on our behalf.
“The result will be Mumbles becoming a more resilient and attractive visitor destination.”
Knights Brown divisional director Andrew Eilbeck said: “We are proud of our dedication to apprenticeships, which demonstrates our commitment to nurturing local talent and offering valuable opportunities for individuals beginning their careers in the industry.
“Through the Mumbles Coastal Protection Scheme, we are pleased to contribute to the community by promoting skill development and supporting sustainable employment, leaving a lasting and positive legacy for the local area.
“We are incredibly proud of our dedicated team, who have worked tirelessly to deliver this scheme. Their expertise, commitment, and collaborative approach have been instrumental in the project’s success.”
Knights Brown staffing at Mumbles has also been helped – through a number of other recruits – by Swansea Council’s Beyond Bricks and Mortar team which helps deliver additional benefits from council contracts. These boosts include apprenticeships, jobs and work experience for Swansea residents.
The multi-million pound Mumbles coastal protection project is on course for completion this summer (note: 2025).
Its aim is to safeguard the community, its seafront homes, businesses, organisations, facilities and events from rising sea levels and coastal erosion.
The council say the prom has been improved for visitors, with improved accessibility, more greenery, new public art and more play opportunities.
The project was mainly funded by the Welsh Government.

Apprentices to join programme launched by housing association
Wrapping up #FeelGoodFriday with a bit of local press for one of our #Apprentices.
Liam has smashed his way through the #CivilEngineering course, including a degree & his #ProfessionalReview for the #InstituteOfCivilEngineers securing himself a natty little 'IEng' post-nominal + setting himself well on the way to #Chartership.
His employer have been long term partners with #ARU over the last 5 years and I can't wait to see their younger cohorts achieving the same!

What's particularly interesting is that whilst the sector is acutely aware of the potential impact of technology (ie #AI) on their futures, there is a strong recognition/expectation that #apprentices on our course will have firm foundation in the basic principals of effective #DoubleEntryBookkeeping as well as advanced knowledge of #TaxLaw and legislation so that they can add value to any work that technology might be assisting them with. This seems entirely sensible to me!
#Adobe is offering grants to #Design Studios to hire #Apprentices as part of a wider programme to help young creatives.
Adobe is also building a #Mentor network to offer advice and portfolio reviews.

Another minor career milestone today - 15 students undertook a small lab exercise I put together. Barring a couple of instances that didn't work as expected, it was reasonably successful. Some constructive feedback from students and colleague. I'm very much enjoying this teaching malarkey. #CareerChange #teaching #CyberSecurity #InfoSec #apprentices #GlosCol
Housing Association to increase its maintenance and repairs staffing by 50%
This represents an increase of more than 50% on current staffing levels in the dedicated responsive repairs team.
Pobl says the investment demonstrates its ongoing commitment to delivering “exceptional repairs and maintenance services”, providing a more efficient service and better value for money for customers.
The new roles cover a variety of trades disciplines including engineers, electricians, roofers and flooring specialists, as well as supervisor and manager’s posts. With recruitment already underway It is anticipated that the new jobs will be rolled out in a phased approach across the 25/26 financial year.
The Group will also be creating five new apprenticeship posts to help tackle the growing challenge of attracting young people into a trades career, a move aimed at enabling Pobl to safeguard and secure the long-term trades pipeline, creating customer focussed technically skilled tradespeople.
John Connolly, Director of Trades at Pobl Group, said: “This recruitment drive, and the expansion of our in-house trades team, is an important step forward in enhancing the quality and efficiency of our repairs and maintenance services. It’s a big investment that will enable us to take greater control over the service we offer, ensuring a consistent, high-quality experience for customers.
“We’ve listened to feedback and used it to shape how our repairs and maintenance service will look going forward. Under our new structure, with the expanded team, not only are we aiming to provide an improved service with greater accountability and flexibility, it will also ensure better value for money for customers who want to know that their rent money is being used as efficiently as possible.
“We are particularly excited about the newly created apprenticeships and providing opportunities for young people to develop and grow. It is an exciting time for the Group following the merger between Linc Cymru and Pobl last year. This recruitment drive is an example of the community focussed services and investment programmes made possible by being part of a large but local expanded group providing homes, care and support for the people of Wales.”
Following the successful merger between Linc Cymru and Pobl in 2024 the Group now manages over 24,000 homes, with ambitious plans to deliver more than 4,500 new homes over the next five years, and provides care and support to almost 17,000 individuals.

The current #juniorwages system means big businesses like #Coles #Maccas and #Woolies are taking $3.5 billion off young workers every year 😤 And it doesn't end there! Young workers under 18 don't earn #superannuation (unless they work full time) and our young #apprentices are still not earning enough to get by!
@drawkcab @ChrisMayLA6 #Apprentices aged under 25 and earning less that £50k do not attract #EmployersNI contribution.
I believe it likely that the significant majority of those in hair and beauty meet those criteria.
I'm sitting in on the #BCS #NAW25 Local Digital Skills session, shaping up to be a really interesting session, the skills agenda is on the move again and #Apprenticeships and #apprentices need to be at heart of it:

Just a quick reminder/observation that; in the #UK there is no #NationalInsurance Employers contribution for #apprentices aged 25 or under who earn less that £50k
So, if you use #apprenticeships as part of your #skills portfolio, either by recruiting fresh #talent or #upskilling some of your existing staff, you could be saving 15% (from April '25) on your payroll costs, for the duration of their programme.
I've got a varied and growing suite of courses on offer:
