1000 richest people are approched. "The end of the world is here. Time to go to your doomsday bunker", they are told. The billionaires nodded. They knew this was coming. They were prepared.

So they gathered their loved ones and locked themselves in luxury bunkers. No contact to outside world.

10 years later they emerge. The world has healed. The air is breathable, people are happy. "What was the catastrophy?" they ask the first person they meet.

She screams: "THEY GOT OUT!!!"

The Color Game. “Humans can’t reliably recall colors. This is a simple game to see how good (or bad) you are at it. We’ll show you five colors, then you’ll try and recreate them.” I scored 39/50 but got a perfect score on one color. dialed.gg/

If you are writing contemporary fiction you can make sure things like sunrise times and the phases of the moon are accurate. You can do a quick Google search (add -ai to keep from getting a wrong answer from AI) and you can find calendars with those details.

You won’t read a more interesting and engaging introduction to the art and science of textual criticism than this one (and I promise that’s not damning with faint praise.) Plus, I learned the fun new word sphalmatology. antigonejournal.com/2026/02/sc via @metafilter

@attribot @linguistics In Danish (which has strong lexical similarities with German) my favourite adjective (and adverb, because that’s how Danish works 😳) is ‘øretæveindbydende’, which translates into ‘face-slap inviting(ly)’ - and yes we have a specific noun for face slap: ‘øretæve’ which in Literary translates into ‘ear-beat.’ Incidentally, the words for beat and bitch are homonyms in Danish, but I digress…

… is, instead of making all content from an account invisible, present a warning that the account has been shut down along with information about why, and a mechanism for viewing the account’s contents anyway, so all users can see for themselves, what this account has been doing.

(When legally possible, e.g. not child porn, death threats, etc.)

Open court documents is essentail to any democracy, as this upholds the trust in the fairness of the courts.

Mastodon should learn from that.

I read Nearly all Octavia Butler's body of work, though long ago, recently reread it. It got even more potent the 2nd time through. Here's a tiny snip, via meme.
Begs the additional assertions:
To be led by a rapist is...
To be led by a performative victim is...

Meme with an Octavia Butler quote:
Choose your leaders with wisdom & forethought.
To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led by all that the opportunists who control the fool.
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.
To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies.
To be lead by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.

What does disgust for disabled people look like in its purest, most densely crystallized form, like a black diamond of hatred spat out by one of the most twisted, hollowed-out, f*cked-up criminals in US history? Imagine supporting this man and calling yourself a "patriot," a "Christian," or even a "human being"? theatlantic.com/magazine/archi

It would be nearly a year before Dunford retired and Milley assumed the role. At his welcome ceremony at Joint Base Myer—Henderson Hall, across the Potomac River from the capital, Milley gained an early, and disturbing, insight into Trump’s attitude toward soldiers. Milley had chosen a severely wounded Army captain, Luis Avila, to sing “God Bless America.” Avila, who had completed five combat tours, had lost a leg in an IED attack in Afghanistan, and had suffered two heart attacks, two strokes, and brain damage as a result of his injuries. To Milley, and to four-star generals across the Army, Avila and his wife, Claudia, represented the heroism, sacrifice, and dignity of wounded soldiers.

It had rained that day, and the ground was soft; at one point Avila’s wheelchair threatened to topple over. Milley’s wife, Hollyanne, ran to help Avila, as did Vice President Mike Pence. After Avila’s performance, Trump walked over to congratulate him, but then said to Milley, within earshot of several witnesses, “Why do you bring people like that here? No one wants to see that, the wounded.” Never let Avila appear in public again, Trump told Milley. (Recently, Milley invited Avila to sing at his retirement ceremony.)
