WA St Ski & Snowboard Museum

The Washington State Ski & Snowboard Museum is a free museum dedicated to the history of skiing and snowboarding in the Evergreen State.

Located on Snoqualmie Pass, WA, WSSSM is fifty minutes from the heart of Seattle on I-90 (right across from the DOT rest area!) and a nice stopping point for cross-state travelers.

You can find the museum open noon-5 Fri-Sun.

It's National Stamp Day and the Olympics are later this month, so it seems like a wonderful time to learn about the history of USPS Olympic Stamps. USPS started in 1932 by commemorating skiing in the Lake Placid Winter Games and most recently gave us a commemoration of snowboarding in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Someone told us it's National Eyewear Day, so we thought you might like to see some of ours. This style of ski goggle was the fashionable way to protect your eyes on early to mid-twentieth century slopes. They came into use in the early 1930's and were still being sold when the modern sealed goggles pioneered by orthodontist Bob Smith became available in the late 1960's.

It's National Gingerbread Day, USA!

We’re not sure why our nation celebrates gingerbread in summer, but here’s a flashback to staff member Bama Brokaw’s wintery recreation of the Summit at Snoqualmie in which she reproduced all four base areas and I-90!

Sadly, you cannot find this at the museum as it was perishable. If you're lucky, though, you may be able to find Bama here coordinating volunteers and being awesome!

Dear Trees of Washington,
Happy Arbor Day!

Today we recognize the positive effects of the trees surrounding our slopes. They give us oxygen, help keep the soil in place, house wildlife, AND look really pretty. Yay, trees! You're awesome!

Love always,
The Washington State Ski and Snowboard Museum

In addition to selling books, I have a library of ski and snowboard related books people can read when they visit me!

Sometimes people want to take these books home to read. While I'm too nervous to let the general public do that, I allow my volunteers the privilege. (They also get perks like free food, drinks, and occasionally the ability to earn big ticket items like snowboards. I love my volunteers!)

*UPDATED*
If you want to hit some lift-serviced Washington slopes this weekend, you still have three options! Crystal, Mission Ridge, and White Pass are all operating Saturday and Sunday. None of them have announced plans to be open in May, so this is likely your last chance until the snow comes back!

In addition to selling crisp new books, I have a library with ski and snowboard related reading material for all ages that folks can read while visiting!

(Psst... Want to read one of these books outside of the museum? Volunteers get the ability to sign materials out to read at home!)

Did you know that avalanches can happen any time of year if the conditions are right. (Wrong?)

With that in mind... Backcountry safety gear is your friend! Seen here are some of the things you might want to have with you when heading off maintained slopes.
But remember that your strongest weapon against backcountry disaster is awareness of your surroundings and knowledge of avalanche triggers. Check out the Northwest Avalanche Center for help with that!

Some backcountry safety gear: an ice axe for self-arrests and climbing assists, a shovel for digging, collapsable probes for determining what's under the surface, an airbag backpack that will inflate to protect you from blunt traumas, a whistle to draw attention to yourself, and avalanche beacons to assist in rescues (both in finding others and in helping others find you)

Don't you just hate it when you have everything set to travel back to 1966 for some old fashioned skiing, including those hard to come by TARDIS reservations, but can't remember what people were wearing then? Well, check out this video made a few years ago by our friends at the Colorado Snowsports Museum!

(The TARDIS should be able to hook you up with something appropriate, but I like to double check.)

Skins are sticky strips of material that go on the underside of a touring ski to help users go uphill with less effort. Once upon a time, they were actual animal skins. Now they’re highly engineered manmade materials.

With Washington lift service down to weekends only, you might be curious about ski touring. We have an exhibit about that!

And if the exhibit spurs your curiosity, we can hook you up with a copy of Lowell Skoog's book Written in Snows, which has an entire chapter on Washington mountaineers.
