Does life move in circles? That is an excellent question to ask, especially in our case regarding the earthquakes in the broader area of Santorini-Amorgos. Why so much noise, though? What is the particular interest in this area? Let me explain this issue

M6.5 earthquake, Jan Mayen Island, at 02.33 UTC on 10 March 2025. Recorded in Nottingham using 'slinky' (top) and horizontal pendulum school seismometers

Two seismograms. The first shows a strong P-wave signal at about 02.37 UTC. The second also shows an S-wave signal at about 02.41 UTC followed by surface waves from about 02.44 UTC.

On January 15th, 2022, an undersea volcano off the coast of Tonga exploded, becoming one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recent memory. In a new paper, researchers show that there was a seismic wave released about 15 minutes before the main eruption, before there was any visible surface disruption. The waves were detected at seismic stations about 750 km away, roughly as strong as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. This is the first precursor signal detected so far.

Dear colleagues, we are delighted to share our latest research on the #body_wave velocity #structure of the #Santorini #VolcanicComplex. Let's get into a time-capsule, see what happened in the 2011-12 #unrest period and compare the results to the latest #swarms obtaining the 3-D seismic structure of these periods.

A M3.8 earthquake rattled Montreal today - small, but a good opportunity to take a look at the geology.

Did you know that in 1663, a M7.3+ earthquake occurred to the northeast, and it's thought to be associated with ...a 350 million-year-old asteroid impact?!?

Dear colleagues, we look forward to receiving submissions in @FrontEarthSci (Frontiers - Earth Science) covering different areas of geoscience (#petrology, #geochemistry, #seismology).

The aim of this Research Topic is to explore the #volcanichazard near these areas using different methods, investigate current forecasting approaches, and highlight the importance of an exposure map outcome in order to produce an ameliorated volcanic risk assessment.

A M4.9 earthquake struck northern Baja California yesterday - right below the massive Cierro Prieto geothermal field. Why does the flat Mexicali Valley sit above such hot rocks, and why is it so seismically active?

OK - on my way to #EGU24 in #Vienna! I will be talking about ML emulators for #tsunami #inundation on Friday - but am involved in many more studies before that. Do shout out if you’re doing presentations I can’t miss and it would be great to catch up!

There was another magnitude 6.3 earthquake today added to the two magnitude 6.3 earthquakes on 7 October. Interferograms from Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar satellite are now available. See this post on LinkedIn for two interferograms: linkedin.com/posts/rayan-nas_s The figure shows "wrapped" interferograms that are contour maps of the ground displacement, with 3 cm per contour (or fringe). There are two different radar "look" directions. See also mastodon.social/@EricFielding/
