Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do!

Noticed while hunting for a dropped pair of glasses. There were whole bunches of them, but this single bloom seemed very pretty all by itself.

A single white daisy with a stippled yellow center against a background of dark green leaves. There are a few out-of-focus flowers in the background as well, and a single bud that seems to be trying to photobomb the daisy in the middle.

I've been frustrated the last 4 years that my beloved “hebi” (snake) cucumbers have produced almost nothing. Often there would be no female flowers, and when there were they'd just wither and die. So this year I've gotten out early to hand pollinate. I was surprised and delighted today when, Q-tip in hand, I noticed native pollinators at work.

This little beetle is about 3mm in length.

@mattg Maybe “thoe” ...? 🤔 No, “thow” ... 🤔

Bro, Crow, Doe, Foe, Flow, Floe, Go, Hoe, No, Oboe, Poe, Row, Roe, Show, Snow, Slow, Toe... this isn't helping.

English is just brain-damaged.

I think I need taller poles. 🤔

@bruno Wow, such good memories. I was traveling with an American high school orchestra in Austria, and we were under strict rules: no alcohol. Except we got a free day in Vienna, and I found myself alone at a tiny cafe near the University. I asked the waiter (who was fluent in English) to suggest a beer. He said, “we have Budweiser on tap.” He waited a beat to take in my reaction, then smiled and said, “the real one.” Excellent call.

@paulfoerster Good memories. 🙂 Another beer I never drink at home, only when eating out at a Chinese restaurant. Some really good meals behind that.

There is only a handful of beers where I pour, take my first sip, and double take: “Damn. That's good.” This is one of them. Beautiful nose with yeast, dried fruit, and cloves. Durable foamy head. Full body, with strong roasted wheat and malt flavor, yeasty, well balanced, dry, spicy and bubbly on the tongue. This is not your typical wheat beer: you can pair this one with roast beef, German pork loin, or any main dish that intimidates lesser beers.

“The rocket's top fell off while it was still standing on the pad.”
“Oh, my. How is the payload fairing?”

@thomasb I always love to hear when a brewery is packed; so many are struggling these days. We did a circle tour of Faction, Almanac, and the Humble Sea taproom a few weeks ago; Almanac was packed, Almanac was busy but nothing like packed; Humble Sea was pretty quiet (although their taproom there in Alameda is small). Of the three, I think Faction is my favorite just for the beer. 'course, they also steal the prize for most scenic.

A California Smithwick's. Nice red/amber color, faint malty nose, a beautiful dense cream-colored head, caramel malty taste (but not sweet) with just a hint of hop bitterness and modest carbonation, clean finish. Low alcohol. In other words, Smithwick's. $17/16oz-4-pack, but a minority-owned brewery and Made In America! 🇺🇲

I confess that I am surprised, still, when something Just Works. This is a USB-C cable that was thin enough to snake around behind the hutch on my desk, fitted with a USB-B adapter and plugged into my beloved Epson photo scanner.

(As with every generation of cable I've ever used, for years I could never find a USB-C cable when I needed it, and now have more than I know what to do with. So they've become the default, even with pre-USB-C devices.)

@Catlynn Did your little guy come back? My scrub jays actually signal when they want the birdbath refilled, and then wait for me.
