"#Pakistan’s experience offers critical insights into managing the #cleanenergy transition, particularly in integrating #renewableenergy within complex economic and political landscapes. Global grid operators must reassess their approach to prosumers; consumers who are also producers, and increasingly embracing advanced distributed renewable technologies like #solar, #wind and #batterystorage." bit.ly/4hYA8AZ

"With projected #emissions from land-use change (such as deforestation) of 4.2 billion tonnes, total CO₂ emissions are projected to be 41.6 billion tonnes in 2024, up from 40.6 billion tonnes last year.

Over the last 10 years, fossil CO₂ emissions have risen while land-use change CO₂ emissions have declined on average – leaving overall emissions roughly level over that period. This year, both fossil and land-use change CO₂ emissions are set to rise, with drought conditions exacerbating emissions from deforestation and forest degradation fires during the El Niño climate event of 2023-2024."

“To limit [#globalwarming] to 1.5C, the ratio of #cleanenergy lending and equity underwriting relative to #fossilfuels needs to average a minimum of 4 to 1 through the end of this decade…most recent data show that in 2022 that ratio was 0.73 to 1.” bloomberg.com/graphics/2024-co

"The A.I. boom is leaving the tech industry in an awkward spot. After years of claiming to be environmentally friendly, some of the biggest companies in the world are making hard trade-offs between increasing profits and lowering emissions. It’s the kind of conundrum that often leaves executives wanting to have their cake and eat it, too."

Berkeley Lab just released the 2024 version of its excellent utility-scale #solar report: bit.ly/lbluss Highlights:

1. More than 50% of new U.S. grid capacity came from solar in 2023

2. Half of new solar capacity is built in Energy Communities

3. Installed costs of PV have fallen by 8% since 2022, to $1.43/WAC ($1.08/WDC) in 2023

4. Since 2013, competing drivers (trackers, inverter loading, solar resource) have caused average capacity factors

by plant vintage to stabilize around 25% (AC)

5. Most projects installed in 2023 seem to benefit more from the Production Tax Credit than the Investment Tax Credit (not considering the unique risks of each credit type)

6. Newer solar projects had greater value than their generation costs in 2023, yielding over $1 billion in benefits

"US #utilities are bracing for demand to outstrip supply during the next few years, with data centers accounting for the bulk of the increase. Supply, both in generation and transmission, will take years to catch up under all but the most conservative scenarios. By 2028, utilities would need to increase annual energy generation by between 7% and 26% above the 2023 total to meet projected demand. That’s far beyond the largest five-year generation boost of about 5% that US utilities achieved from 2005 through 2023." bain.com/insights/utilities-mu #datacenters

@modoenergy projects a "total battery #energystorage buildout of just under 150 GW by the end of 2030. CAISO and ERCOT both continue to see significant growth, each with around 40 GW of commercially operational capacity by the end of 2030. PJM has the potential to experience the largest growth of all. By this method of projection, battery energy storage capacity in PJM could grow from around 400 MW today to nearly 30 GW by the end of the decade." modoenergy.com/research/ercot-

“A generational transformation is underway in the renewable energy sector. The days of simply executing a power purchase agreement — to either finance a project or offset carbon emissions — are over. Today, Big Tech’s demands for specific project development plans and contractual provisions can create — or destroy — millions of dollars in value for renewable companies, a daunting prospect for a sector whose health is imperative for combating climate change.” utilitydive.com/news/big-tech-
