Went to Newburgh to try and spot the aurora last night. Caught a bit of green on camera but the stars stole the show. Incredible.

Check out this magnificent beauty! Looks so regal.

Sunset tonight over Aberdeen harbour was stunning. 10/10 💖
One of our beautiful goldfinch visitors in the golden winter sun last week. They’re one of my favourites (you’ll soon learn pretty much all birds are my favourites), and they look a little bit emo with their black eyeliner and red eyeshadow. It’s giving Sweet Cheers era My Chemical Romance.

I love great spotted woodpeckers, and this one posed perfectly for a few seconds before flying off. Was so glad I had my camera with me.
Beautiful ruddy turnstone I saw at Aberdeen beach over the weekend. Unfortunately not making that wonderful flipping stone noise because this one preferred foraging in the grass.

Took my new (to me) camera out for a proper spin this morning down at the beach. This crow was a more than willing model - I’d never noticed that they have a green and purple sheen to their feathers before. Makes me love them even more!

Watching red squirrels is always a joy. I saw three on my walk yesterday, though the third one could have been one of the first two that had moved around the field.

Another great birding day comes to an end. There’s a peregrine falcon on that pylon, honest. Can’t decide what’s been the best part of today; the stunning sunrise, the weasel, sanderlings, or watching a peregrine preen in the distance.
For the last day of my holiday, I decided to head down to Aberdeen beach & Donmouth Nature Reserve for sunrise wildlife watching.
Saw my first weasel (I think - didn’t catch it’s tail) and purple sandpiper. Loved watching the sanderlings run along the shore.

@BathNature Food is rarely scarce in our garden, so maybe our robins are extra territorial. When we first moved in the robins were our only visitors, and when we put feeders out and other birds started visiting our robin wore himself out trying to chase off every single bird 😂
@BathNature Beautiful photo. I wondered why our robins are always chasing the dunnocks around! It’s like watching a Tom & Jerry cartoon as they chase each other in circles around a bush they’re both fond of 😂
Been kept company by buzzards today. Started out seeing a buzzard fly up in front of me & overhead on our morning walk. It must have been perched somewhere hidden just off the trail - I felt bad about disturbing it but it was so well hidden there was no way to avoid disturbing it.
Then I saw a buzzard (maybe the same one?) flying over the reservoir and fields as the light started to fade. Thanks buzzards! 💛

First garden bird of the year I saw was a great spotted woodpecker, which feels like a nice gift as they’re not regular visitors to our garden. Photo not from today because it’s dark & rainy this morning.
What was your first bird of 2023?

@VickyOuten Happy new year to you also! Beautiful photo of a dunnock.
Happy New Year 2023. Hope it's a good year for you!
I'm starting the year off with one of my favourite birds a dunnock

Final bird nerds of 2022; first went to the reservoir, which was frozen over, and then headed down to Aberdeen harbour & Greyhope Bay.
This was the year I really got into birdwatching at last and I’ve loved every second of it 🖤 Here’s to more time in the presence of feathered friends in 2023.

Been looking back at some of my favourite photos I took this year but didn’t end up sharing anywhere. This reed bunting was perched in the tops of trees, singing & posing like a pro.
I’m missing taking photos of birds. My camera has a viewfinder focus issue, which means I have no clue what’s in focus so it’s near impossible to get an in focus shot of anything that moves. Wasn’t planning on buying a new (secondhand) camera just yet 😬
Since covid has shelved our Christmas plans, I’m going to use my energy (when it re-appears) to try and finish off some of / all the books I’ve got on the go. 5 books at once is too chaotic even for me 😬 #NatureBooks #CurrentlyReading #Books #Reading
