You know why we Germans are so pedantic about data protection? Someone around 90 years ago went through all records available, selected people with certain criteria, with the help of IBM, and then killed them all.

We don't want to be on any list.

And now the US Gov and Musk are trying to get access to all data they have about every person and put them into a big fat DB and run AI over it.

I am afraid what they will do with that.

@nina_kali_nina Thank you! I _did_ spend a wonderful NYE reading your entire article. I lived through all the events you chronicle and it was delightful revisiting some old favorites. Gem!! CP/M! Late nights listening to the 5.25 floppies seek back and forth, back and forth. Sigh. Good times… 😃 Thanks again

Hi, everyone.

I am back from my blogging sabbatical with a new blog post.

I'm proud of this one.

Donald Trump is holding a rally on Thursday in a rented hall in my hometown, Tuscon. I would prefer to ignore that sad fact. But since the building has my name on it, I need to say something.

Attacks Trump for immigration policy separating families.

@b0rk I always enjoy your focus on key concepts & commands that are useful to a practicing software engineer.

In your latest, wizardzines.com/zines/git/ , I love the work you do with metaphors and mental models. I was pleased speechless by the simplicity & clarity of p9, "What's a branch?' Having all 3 in front of me at once... something clicked & I thought, "THAT'S why those error messages look like that."

These moments are golden for me. Thank you. Your work is an accelerant.

An unidentified vessel ran aground off the coast of Tobago on February 7th, leaking oil, coating beaches, wildlife, and over 80 kilometres of the Caribbean Sea. Bellingcat and our Discord community look into the origins of this mystery vessel: bellingcat.com/news/2024/02/14

Work in progress of a seaside scene with some boats. I’m hoping to finish this tomorrow if I don’t mess it up!!

Having issues with the cheap paint I’m having to use, it stains and won’t lift off properly. #wip #painting #art #watercolour

I am currently writing an explainer: Everything you ever wanted to know about the Fourteenth Amendment, section 3.

nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-c

(I am writing this because I want to know all about section 3.)

Spoiler: It's not as straightforward as some pundits would have you believe.

(Before you tell me I'm wrong, wait until I finish writing my explainer :)

Adding: I mean, you can go ahead and tell me I'm wrong now. But I won't have an answer yet.

Feminist killjoys are surprisingly fun. Come to the dark side, we have:

- beverages that are safe to drink
- people who actually code
- consent
- people who can solder almost as well as our mothers
- artists who make beautiful and thought-provoking things that take skill to think of and make
- authors
- goats
- musicians
- discussions about computers, yes, computers!
- people who will fix your devices
- people who will darn your socks
- people who can teach you about history

It took me a long time to learn this, but it sums up my thinking whenever I consider how to write code:

Their formulation also succinctly illustrates common software development disfunctions and anti-patterns

@b0rk my vote of “comfortable” comes from a decade’s intense usage in the last century and regular return visits teaching code schoolers how to get simple edits done. I don’t prefer it over other alternatives. On the topic of comfort - so important! Ours is an emotional profession when we look closely. P.s. love the zines - have the whole set

Everyone thinks, haha, these squirrels don't even remember where they hid 90% of the nuts they store for the winter they are so dumb, but nobody ever asks if the squirrels might be out there thinking, my ancestors planted this forest that provides for us all, and my children's children will know the same of me.

If I die before my dog, let him see my body.
He understands death and by feeling my death, he can mourn me.
If he doesn't see me again, he'll think I abandoned him and will continue to wait for my return...
If I die before my friend, let him say goodbye.
