Inspired by playing Horizon, I designed my own version of a control tower! I used a mixture of metal impacts/ratchets, air pressure pops, & a low-end horn to design the pulsing effect. One of my favorite layers/recordings for this redesign was using electromagnetic recordings from my coffee grinder. It really brought the Sci-Fi feel to life for me!Even though the tower is distant, you can feel it's impact and pulsing from far distances.

A lot of my recordings are from project Foley sessions, but there are the occasional outdoor session. Some of my favorite recordings are the balloon sounds I captured for an animated short film. A couple years ago I took a short trip to Grand Marais, MN during the winter and captured some rushing water under ice!

Part of being a sound designer means recording your own sounds for, pretty much, every project. But what do you do with those sounds after the project is over? You edit them up and but them in your own collection of sound effects, of course! I've got a significant backlog of sounds from previous projects, so I wanted to share a few with y'all.

One of the techniques I like to practice is using synthesis to create new sounds.Theres a ton of cool sample-based & wave table VST synths out on the market now that really let you mangle anything into something completely different. With a bit of modulation on oscillator parameters and processing you can make some pretty wild impacts, spells, lasers explosions.... Anything your creative heart desires!

After going through numerous festivals last year, Pop! is now available to watch on YouTube! I had the pleasure of working with Ruby Wang on her thesis film at Ringling. I haven't done a lot of JRPG styled sound design, so this pushed me out of my normal comfort zone a bit! There's a lot of elemental attacks in this fight, so it was wide open in how to approach the design. I used a lot of electromagnetic recordings and organic sounds design my lightning and fire sfx. I can't believe it's been four months since my work on After Party wrapped! It was such a delight to do the post-audio for this film. The overtones of Paul Thomas Anderson style character interactions brought a lot of charm, and humor to navigating how to hang out in a post-COVID world. One feature I miss the most from Pro Tools was the slow-playback. I used it a ton to double check foley edits, and it was also helpful for pitch-down previewing. So I tried to re-make it in Lua! Might need some tweaking for FX tails, but I think its pretty cool you can make something like this for a DAW. #reaperdaw #audioprogramming #filmaudio

I was nervous at first to try out programming at all.
I never thought I was that great at math, and every time I tried to self-teach it was so focused on math that I couldn't quite wrap my head around the base concepts. A lots changed since I learned Python through my day job. After making a connection with an audio programmer and diving into a C++ skills test about a month ago, I was able to do a bit of audio filtering.

I wanted to share a new tool that I built to further my growth in game audio. Over the last month or so, I developed a low pass filter plugin for Wwise! It's a second order Butterworth low pass w/ output gain control. This was my first dive into C++, & was definitely a learning curve from my experience w/ Python. Using pointers & references to your data in memory vs extra variables to apply changes is more granular than Python, but so cool and interesting! #gameaudio #wwise #audioprogramming

I have some exciting news to share! 5-25-77 is starting to come to streaming services, as well as physical media. There's been so much time and work put into this film; it's such a joy to see it finally be released into the world.
