IWW Union expands to Finland! (Industrial Workers of the World)
Sabby has opened for co-op membership. The community centre where I do game dev and art and events has outgrown its current venue, and outgrown the whole malevolent benefactor structure.
Because they know that the future of the games industry is worker owned.
I've been a part of Sabby since its inception in 2022. And since then I've used it for coworking, for studio workshops, for playtesting of games, and pitching of ideas. It's been a base for union organising, and radicalising game developers to acknowledge and take control of the politics of game making in/on this country.
I'm pretty passionate about this massive shift toward a worker owned industry, and the evidence that Sabby provides that "oh yeah, this is happening."
Sabby has:
Hosted over 150 events
Hosted over 200 days of coworking
Helped secure hundreds of thousands of dollars for local studios
Contributed ~100 zines in to zin-o-sphere
Vanquished over a dozen beyblades in heated tournaments
#Tourism workers in Southern #California just won a historic battle for the highest #MinimumWage in the nation—a perfect counterpoint to the Republican-led tax bill that rewards billionaires at the expense of low-income Medicaid recipients.
The #union-backed campaign is a powerful lesson in creative, proactive, and long-term mobilizing for economic justice.

tech workers are gonna learn far too late that they are much more workers than they are tech, but anyway you deserve a tech union
#Iceland tested a reduced workweek 2014-2019:
”A pair of trials covering 1.3 per cent of the Icelandic workforce revealed that slashing weekly hours led to better employee #wellbeing, with less stress and burnout, while #productivity stayed the same or improved. The positive results sparked union pressure in Iceland, and now 86% of Icelandic workers either work shorter weeks or have the right to ask to do so.“

Edit: The initial source was misleading, so I replaced it and adjusted the quote. Also see: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-day_workweek#Iceland
I can't find a recent article about that. The most recent I see is 2022: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/12/16/business/starbucks-tipping/
Do you have a URL to an article that verifies the 2025 state of this issue, @mhoye?
Bring them louder you cowards. Workers, unionize your workplace and don't let them take it away again.
> Many companies that rolled back DEI policies are quietly bringing them back

Some good news out of Norway as their largest trade union votes to boycott Israel and demands sanctions against the genocide of Palestinians.

People think they miss manufacturing jobs. They don’t. They miss social benefits guaranteed by a union.
40 hour work week? Union won.
Worker’s comp insurance? Union won.
Overtime pay? Union won.
I can tell you what happens if only a few do it: they get harassed by their admin, possibly even fired (if they haven't yet achieved tenure).
I can also tell you what happens if everyone does it, because I have seen this, too. It's called Working To Rule. It's a classic and effective type of job action that is similar to a strike, but allows you to still collect paychecks. When we did it, admin buckled within a week. Much harder to pick off and punish individuals when the entire staff maintains solidarity.

“We’ve had members travelling across Sydney in peak hour, adding to traffic congestion, merely to sit in a cafe downstairs on a laptop because there’s no room in the office,” PSA acting general secretary Troy Wright said.
“What we’re doing today is […] departments are telling us there is adequate accommodation for all their staff, we’re encouraging our members to attend the office and give and test whether that’s correct.”
Union troubled by layoffs at Halifax restorative justice office during contract talks
The six unionized workers, employed by the non-profit Community Justice Society, received the notices April 7 and were told to clear their caseloads within 90 days.

Multiple options possible simultaneously:
☑ hacking elections is always wrong
☐ I'm not sure if hacking is justified
☑ the left would be justified in hacking elections
The problem is if they charge you 50 cents more for fries, that profit isn't going to the workers.
They won't be letting go of that extra profit and release the funds back to the workers. They see profit and keep it. The only time they will give any of it to the workers is when they are forced to. As such, the only way workers can retain a living wage is through unionization and collective labour action. And the only way we can maintain our rights to job action and union activity, is by keeping union busters out of our government (which in Canada means no Conservatives).
There is more than enough profit going around for them to give a sliver of it to the people who make it. They don't need any more profit to treat workers fairly, they simply choose not to. You will never get any more of the pie by making them more pie.
He's right. I have no commitment to working more to help Reid Hoffman win.
