Antique glass offers a twisted view in Venice.

Captured on November 2, 2017.

#Italy
Close up view of a circular piece of coloured glass, which fills the frame. There’s a nub in the centre which causes a radial distortion around it, warping the view.

Nearing the top of Grey Mountain at 10:45 am on winter solstice, with the sunrise only just beginning to emerge.

The mountain’s name in Southern Tutchone is The May, referring to the grey-white colour of its rocks.

Captured on December 21, 2019.

Low pinkish light brightens a cloudy but blue winter morning sky. Some short trees are coated in snow, with a larger one in the centre of frame vaguely reminiscent of a wizard’s hat.

The sun is just beginning to creep past the edge of Grey Mountain in Whitehorse. We’re looking across the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport from under the port side wing of C-GANV, a Boeing 737-200 Combi that was operated by Air North, Yukon’s Airline.

Lean on me. Rapa Nui (Isla de Pascua, Easter Island).

Captured on February 2, 2006.

#RapaNui #NikonD70
Sunset on Rapa Nui. A close up view of two moai. The one on the right is leaning forward and, thanks to the angle, seems to be leaning on a more upright statue (though this one is buried in the ground up to the tip of its nose).

Nearly -40° (no matter the scale) by the Yukon River.

Captured on December 31, 2004.

The low sun is diffused by ice fog rising from the Yukon River as the moving water is substantially warmer the air temperature. Some trees are leaning precariously over the water.

“Lost in the desert”
The amazing sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses in the state of Maranhão in Brazil.
In 1981 the Lençóis Maranhenses have been declared a national park (Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses) to protect and preserve this unique eco system. The park covers a protected area of 155.000 ha out of which 90.000 ha are covered with these pitoresque sand dunes which fill with sweet water during the raining season.

The White Pass & Yukon Route railway swing bridge in #Carcross, built in 1900. Still in use during the summers, though it has been fixed in place since 1969.

Captured on September 18, 2022 on the traditional territory of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation.

#Yukon #Canada #fall
We’re halfway across Nares River, which connects Bennett Lake and Nares Lake at Carcross. The photo was taken from a pedestrian bridge, which is not visible in frame. In the centre of the photo is the old swing bridge, which is a red cantilever structure that has the seal/logo of the WP&YR railway on it. The river is deep blue, with fall colours visible on Nares mountain in the distance. The bulk of the town of Carcross is out of frame on the left side.

Still water on the beach offers a perfect reflection of a tiny rocky island in the centre of frame and its trees. Off to the right is the shore and forest proper. Behind, vibrant colours of the early morning sunrise with some wispy clouds adding a bit of texture.

Press button. Receive stick.

The chonky and gorgeous flight attendant call button on an Air North, Yukon’s Airline Hawker Siddeley 748 (now all retired. No more sticks.).

Captured on June 12, 2014.

#Yukon #Canada #avgeek
To say this button is substantial doesn’t do it justice. It’s circular, large and red, producing from the overhead panel by a decent amount and looking for all the world like it could be used to launch nukes. Beside it is a stick figure flight attendant who looks to be holding a stick in front of her.

The Healing Totem on the waterfront in #Whitehorse.

It took carvers spent 20 weeks to craft this totem. Each wood chip was gathered as a symbol of those impacted by residential schools and substance abuse, later burned in a ceremony, with some ashes placed in the totem. The totem was carried through Whitehorse to its home, where it was raised in a community-led ceremony in 2012—a lasting reminder of shared healing and resilience.

#Yukon #Canada
Looking up at the healing totem on a day with dramatic sky and light. Sitting at the top of the totem is a carved raven.
