Trained in #microbiology because I am curious about the ubiquity and diversity of microbial life, but fled academia to labour towards a decentralized, compassionate and creative system of #DIYBio.
To this end I'm organizing with Biotech Without Borders.

Pollinator Week is a great time to share this print, which expresses the central theme of my work about the Future of Pollination for Manufactured Ecosystems. Our food sources & ecosystems around us are dependent on pollinators (mostly bees & other insects, some birds & mammals) but insects populations have lost huge numbers and many species altogether.🧵

#PollinatorWeek #nativeBees #entomology #ecology #sciart #insects #butterflies #beetles #moths #printmaking #linocut #ManufacturedEcosystems

As described this 16” x 20” linocut print combines gold text in a central circle reading “OUR FATE” arching upwards, “IS TIED” horizontally across the middle, “TO THAT OF THE INSECTS” arching downwards in two lines with insects.
 Clockwise from top: two leaf cutter bees (Megachile relativa and M. brevis), the Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Virgin Tiger moth (Apantesis virgo), an Isabella’s Longwings butterfly (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), a blue orchard mason bee (Osmia lignaria), a firefly (Photinus pyralis), the rusty patched bumblebee (Bombus affinis), a white underwing moth (Catocala relicta), an eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica), a sweat bee (Agapostemon sericeus), a hummingbird clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe), the common eastern bumblebee (B. impatiens), a long-horned bee (Melissodes sp.), a monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and centre: eastern snail-shell nesting bee (O. conjuncta).On an abstract background of teal and sand, black text on a white background reads, ‘Manufactured Ecosystems
The Art and Science of Ecosystem Design’

We're thrilled to announce our new project:
docs.coop/

Building on the great work of Suite Numerique (docs.numerique.gouv.fr/home/), we are offering an opportunity to be part of a new collaborative Docs platform as a service, that provides an ethical alternative to Google Docs, Office 365, Notion etc.

Docs is the result of a joint effort lead by the French 🥖 (DINUM) and German 🥨 (ZenDiS) governments which represents a paradigm shift in the way open source software is funded.

It's taking me a moment to really think about this fediverse presence I'm trying to build for NLNL... today I'm remembering to post here letting y'all know our next dance session is tomorrow night May 28th at 7PM. Registration required but $15 donation optional. We want folks to have a safe space in the city to shake their bodies for #exercise, #MentalHeath or any other reason they might have.

Boosts appreciated!

Construction paper cut-out poster for the NLNL event on May 28th, 2025. It says "no phones; no talking; just dance". I've been making these every time and I'm going to try and remember to post them here too because I have been recycling them when they're gone but I sometimes like the way they look. This one is 5/10 IMO but I'm excited for the next one!

@dimitriosmegalos I walked it on the weekend. It was cool to see the sights from the south side of the bridge. And this morning it was so much nicer to bike over the north side as the bikes aren't crammed onto half the path.

«The vast majority [of CHI attendees] seemed fully captured by the capitalist LLM hype machine, trying to build their academic reputations around validating LLM applications that might promise jobs and continued funding […] HCI has always been a bit dominated by corporate pop culture, but this extreme, at this moment, has never felt more tragic and heartless.»

@naturepoker hey are you thinking about talking at HOPE this year at all? I also sent an email to @ATinyGreenCell but I think think that you would also be a good person to talk about your work and how it relates to Binomica's idea of small thoughtful science. Maybe we could do a panel if you know others who have a project that fits your criteria

@naturepoker @jtnystrom

I liked Venomous Lumpsucker by Ned Beauman and Babel by RF Kuang. I don't know if they count as modern countercultural novels though. What I like in my Sci-Fi is interesting ways in which technology is woven into the crises of society and the way in which folks in those worlds construct and pursue their just causes. I just recently read The Sheep Look Up which may have been a countercultural work from the past.
