Vici.org is now on Codeberg:
codeberg.org/renevoorburg/vici

I made a donation too.

For now just a fork of GitHub, but the redesign I am working on will fully switch to Codeberg

For each 2 pages Google crawled, it used to return 1 visitor. Six months ago, it was 6:1. Now it is 18:1. For OpenAI it is 1,500:1 and for Anthropic 600,000:1.
This is not sustainable.

AI training bots are putting online cultural heritage collections at risk, scraping content for training data. Outages, costs, and ignored robots.txt show the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

Advice requested: I've tried several options for EU-hosted shared online document editing (Proton Drive, Mailbox.org Drive, Infomaniak Kdoc) and none of them do what I want: allow me to make a folder with edit permissions for ~5 people where any doc/spreadsheet/upload in that folder or anything below also automatically inherits the permissions from the parent folder. (Google Docs does this by default.)

Is anyone *actually doing this* on a *hosted* something? If so, tell me how! Thanks <3

Ben je wel eens op zoek naar bijvoorbeeld een artikel van een die ergens genoemd wordt?

Bijvoorbeeld:

Art. 1.3 Wet Dieren

Probeer dan Linked Data Overheid (). Daar kun je makkelijk zoeken. LiDO maakt gebruik van de LinkeXtractor ().

Beide zijn .

One a single day, the Amazon bot visits my site vici.org 21419 times, from 432 ip-addresses.

Don't like that.

Green IT is a hot topic, but advice like “clean up your email” rarely makes a real difference.

I managed to reduce the energy use of my websites by around 50% by gradually analyzing traffic and blocking or throttling vague crawlers and bots.

AI crawlers take content without sending visitors — just costs, no return.
Search engines gave traffic. AI gives nothing.

Ad models are failing.
Time for micropayments — or a data strike?

I’ve stopped relying on blocklists for ‘bad’ bots based on user-agent strings. They’re too easy to fake.

Further, proper robots.txt doesn’t mean much either — I keep one more out of principle than effect.

To reduce excessive automated traffic, anonymous access to vici.org is now rate-limited. Logged-in users are not affected.
Want full access? Create an account — it’s free.

Vici.org is experiencing large-scale distributed scraping, with bots fraudulently posing as regular users. Presumably harvested data is being used for AI training.

Great to see vici.org is starting being used for American heritage too. I am fascinated by Mesoamerican culture.

Further analysis suggests a seemingly popular Java based app is using vici.org data-services. Request from all over the world, and a lot of them. The server won’t hold, so started blocking the requests.

Whoever is harvesting vici.org at such a ridiculous pace: please slow it down (and donate to help me keeping my infrastructure running!)

Interest in LibreOffice, the open-source alternative to Microsoft Office, is on the rise, with weekly downloads of its software package close to 1 million a week as users look to avoid subscription costs. That’s the highest download number since 2023. It works on Linux, macOS, Windows and Unix like systems. computerworld.com/article/3840

@aurochs

Probably not for azteccalendar.com. I’m considering a rewrite and open-sourcing it on GitHub.

I might, however, implement something to help cover the costs of running vici.org. Nothing intrusive — maybe something like a membership scheme.

The perfect second system never ships.

Every organization has a hated system. Someone will promise to rebuild it perfectly.

But the Second System Effect inevitably takes hold - scope increases until it promises everything while delivering nothing.

The solution isn't grand promises, but incremental improvements you can ship within weeks with an eye towards where it could go in the future.

To counter enshitification, I've removed Google Ads from azteccalendar.com/.

It’ll cost me about €1000/year in revenue, but these are times where doing the right thing matters more than money.
